Every year on the first Friday of June, America
celebrates National Donut Day with free treats and donut deals, but behind the glaze
and sprinkles is a powerful history of remarkable women who showed up with
compassion when it mattered most. This June 5, The Salvation Army invites its neighbors to fill our community with joy by honoring the heart and resilience of
the tradition.
National Donut Day was established in 1938 to honor the women who volunteered with
The Salvation Army to provide spiritual and emotional care, critical supplies, and freshly
fried donuts to American soldiers on the front lines of World War I. These women
became known as “Donut Lassies,” and today, their legacy is a reminder that small acts
of kindness can carry enormous joy.

More than just pots and pans... This donation represents success and victory for Lindsey and Dion. We are so proud of their accomplishments!

At the Tucker Center of Hope, we often remind our guests that recovery is not simply about avoiding relapse — it is about rebuilding a life with consistency, accountability, humility, and purpose. Lindsey and Dion are a powerful example of what can happen when individuals fully commit themselves to change and are given the opportunity, support, and structure needed to succeed.
Seven months ago, Lindsey arrived at the shelter following a period of incarceration related to a probation violation stemming from a DUI charge. Like many individuals entering recovery, she faced significant obstacles — legal responsibilities, financial burdens, emotional strain, and the difficult process of rebuilding trust in both herself and others. Despite those challenges, Lindsey made the decision to take recovery seriously and remained steadfast in that commitment from the very beginning.
Since entering the program, Lindsey has passed every drug screening administered by her probation officer without exception. She obtained stable employment and has remained successfully employed for five of the last seven months, demonstrating consistency, responsibility, and determination. During that time, she also paid all outstanding probation fees, completed and paid for her required DUI assessment, and worked diligently to resolve past child support obligations. Each accomplishment represented more than simply checking off requirements — they were meaningful steps toward rebuilding stability, independence, and self-worth.
Throughout her journey, Lindsey consistently demonstrated maturity, accountability, and a sincere desire to create a better future for herself. Staff members watched her develop healthy routines, maintain employment, remain compliant with probation requirements, and surround herself with positive influences. Her growth became evident not only through her actions, but through the confidence and clarity she began carrying with her every day.
In February, Lindsey’s boyfriend of four years, Dion, was released from incarceration as well. Lindsey approached staff requesting that he also be considered for shelter placement upon release. Understandably, there was hesitation. As a team, we had witnessed the incredible progress Lindsey had made and wanted to ensure that nothing jeopardized the stability and sobriety she had fought so hard to achieve.
After allowing additional time to observe the situation and revisit the discussion approximately 45 days later, it became increasingly clear that Lindsey was grounded in her recovery and serious about protecting the life she was building. Conversations with both Lindsey and Dion reflected honesty, accountability, and a genuine commitment to long-term sobriety and growth. Based on those observations, the decision was made to welcome Dion into the program.
Since entering the shelter, Dion has demonstrated the same level of determination and persistence in his own recovery journey. He immediately began taking intentional steps toward rebuilding his life, focusing not only on sobriety but on establishing a stable foundation for the future. He obtained Medicaid coverage, worked diligently to secure identification documents including his Social Security card, attended medical and dental appointments, and actively pursued employment opportunities. At this time, Dion is awaiting the completion of a background check for a position expected to begin at approximately $21 per hour — an opportunity that represents a significant turning point in his life.
In addition, efforts were made to advocate on his behalf regarding substantial past court-related debt, helping create a pathway for him to move forward without beginning his recovery journey already overwhelmed by financial hardship. Rather than allowing old mistakes to define him, Dion has chosen to focus on accountability, stability, and becoming the healthiest version of himself.
Together, Lindsey and Dion have accomplished something many believed would be extremely difficult. They have not only remained committed to sobriety and personal growth, but have also worked side by side to rebuild their lives with patience, resilience, and determination. They have supported one another through setbacks, uncertainty, court obligations, employment challenges, and the emotional weight that often accompanies recovery. Instead of returning to old environments and destructive patterns, they chose structure, accountability, and hope.
On Friday, May 22, Lindsey and Dion will move into their own apartment at Waters Edge — a milestone that represents far more than housing alone. It represents stability. It represents second chances. It represents countless early mornings, difficult conversations, passed drug screens, completed paperwork, job applications, court appointments, tears, victories, and the daily decision to keep moving forward even when the process was difficult.
Their story is a reminder that recovery is possible, that people can change, and that when individuals are met with both accountability and compassion, extraordinary outcomes can happen. Lindsey and Dion have truly beaten the odds. Today, both continue to do exceptionally well and have expressed a desire to eventually share their story with others in recovery — hoping their journey may encourage individuals who feel hopeless or believe change is out of reach.
We are incredibly proud of the progress they have made and grateful to have witnessed two people not only reclaim their lives, but build a future together rooted in sobriety, responsibility, and hope.
