What is prescribed fire? 🔥

Prescribed fires are low-intensity fires that are deliberately set to achieve specific conservation or management goals. Along with invasive species control and habitat improvement, prescribed burns can be used to prevent catastrophic wildfire by reducing dense, hazardous fuels and promoting the growth of fire-adapted native species.

The CCRCD recently teamed up with dedicated local groups and volunteers to help eradicate invasive Arundo donax (giant reed). The aggressive Arundo grows up to 4 inches a day, choking out native wildlife and creating severe fire and flood hazards. The teams cleared two large sections of the massive overgrowth by hand-pulling loose stalks, cutting down the stubborn ones, and applying a targeted treatment directly to the cut bases to safely block regrowth.

A massive thank you to the Friends of Alhambra Creek for initiating this vital effort. We also extend our deepest gratitude to Republic Services, Martinez Refinery Company, Martinez Mayor Brianne Zorn, and all the volunteers for their amazing support.

Special thanks to our partners mak-'amham/Cafe Ohlone for including us at the Indigenous People’s Day Event at The Lawrence Hall of Science earlier this week!

It was a busy day at our booth! Attendees and their families had a blast interacting with our fishing game, got to craft boats out of Tule reeds, and learned about ongoing restoration and conservation work going on in Contra Costa County!

Today CCRCD staff returned to the field for another site prep workday!

Staff members were hard at work cleaning litter, removing weeds, laying cardboard, and spreading mulch at Rancho Medanos Junior High in Pittsburg, CA. Through our Monarch Conservation Program, this site will be transformed from a barren hillside to a native pollinator garden later this Fall!

This morning CCRCD staff and our CCAC Fellows particiapted in a site prep workday at Los Medanos Elementary School in Pittsburg, CA!

Our crew spent the morning sheet mulching this site to remedy the soil in preparation for an upcoming pollinator garden. The cardboard and mulch will decompose over the coming months, before CA native pollinator friendly species are planted later this Fall.
