On Wednesday and Friday each week, I am a Blessing Box Keeper for 1CAN. Join me on a tour of our new Pantry in Downtown Concord and then go with me to fill my box in Harrisburg, NC🏚️🥫

Join us tomorrow at the Walmart in the City of Kannapolis from 10AM-5PM. We will be collecting food and monetary donations to keep our community fed and healthy.

Episode 1: Get to Know Kristel Dalton Swayze for Cabarrus County Commissioner

Why am I so passionate about making sure the residents of Cabarrus County can actually live, play and most importantly, work in Cabarrus County? Because, our residents deserve to be able to make a livable wage where they live!

When you see your childhood friends parents lose their jobs and homes, you never fully recover from that. I am pro-business, because I never want to see another 6,000 Cabarrus County residents lose their livelihood overnight!

Unless you saw or lived through the closures of Pillowtex in 2003 and Philip Morris in 2010, you will never fully understand the importance of making sure every resident of Cabarrus County has a stable job and income.

When they lost their jobs, it impacted their families and Cabarrus County as a whole. These workers had to depend on government assistance and support, to survive and reinvent themselves. It was a tragedy for them and our community as a whole. It has taken decades to recover, and some never did fully recover!

Every resident deserves the opportunity to make a livable wage. It should never be a question, of whether people can put food on their tables, put clothes on their children’s back, heat their own home and put a roof over their heads as they tuck into bed at night.

So some people are saying, “Kristel is only out there for the business community”. And I will say this, “I learned from our past and I will always BE A VOICE AND AN ADVOCATE for our 244,000 residents, workforce and families!

Tonight, I had the honor to be invited to attend the Cabarrus County Firefighter's Association 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at the Cabarrus County Fair. I will never forget riding to my office in Charlotte on 9/11 realizing our world would never be the same.

That day men and women rushed up stairwells in the Twin Towers. That day men and women took over a plane to crash it into a field in Pennsylvania, so more damage couldn’t be done. That day men and women rushed around the Pentagon to save others. That day a man in a red bandana saved the lives of countless others. That day my brother-in-law was stationed on the USS Nimitz and they were sent out of port for fear of another attack to be ready to serve if needed. That day our Navy, Army, Marines and Air Force were called upon to protect us. All of these people answered the call that no one ever expected, yet they all answered the call to serve and protect.

That day was tragic, and we lost countless lives out of hatred for our country. My thoughts are with those who lost loved ones and those who acted out of patriotism to serve other selflessly, their lives were forever changed.

I remember those moments and the days following when firemen, police officers, EMS, soldiers and civilians around the country rushed to help in NYC, as the first responders did on 9/11.

May we never forget 9/11, and may we all remember how we stood together on 9/12.

Tonight, was an emotional reminder that we had helpers on 9/11. In the years following, we have had countless others who heard the call to serve and protect our communities and country. It takes special men and women of courage, and I am forever grateful.

We are better together, when we stand together. May the world be filled with love and less hatred. May we be good humans who protect each other, so that those lives lost, weren’t made in vain.

This little girl grew up in Cabarrus County, where she was nurtured and cared for by her family and friends. In middle school she was bullied, but she grew up strong and knew at the end of the day, she was protected and had the best life. Her people taught her that she was loved and that she was a survivor.

All of it made her stronger. It taught her to love big. It taught her to protect those she loved, because they loved and protected her. Her life successes and struggles taught her love, respect, compassion, kindness and resiliency.

She was never in the military, but her life lessons gave her the mindset, that if 3 go in, 3 come out. She is a protecter, because she was cared for, loved and protected so deeply. She grew up and knew she must carry that same responsibility forward.

She loves so deeply about the community that raised her. She is ready to serve it and care for it, because without it, this little girl wouldn’t be who she is today!

I am that little girl and I will always be a better person, because of my past and I want to ensure a better future for all of us!

I love my community and Cabarrus County with all of my heart, and I am ready to serve it!

As a lifelong resident of Cabarrus County, it has been an honor to watch as volunteers have helped protect our rich history and share the stories of Cabarrus County, leading back for Stephen Cabarrus. Back in 1792, Stephen Cabarrus was the NC Speaker of the House when he made the deciding vote to create Cabarrus County.

As a community business owner and advocate, it has been an honor to work alongside the Historic Cabarrus Association for decades. I have watched them grow from their many locations, to their present location at the Historic Old Courthouse, that they share with the Cabarrus Arts Council. It has been a blessing to have helped them create educational collateral to promote our history and share our story.

Today, the Historic Cabarrus Association held an open house to showcase their newly restored clock tower. After years of fundraising and reconstruction, the historic clock will soon be set back to its proper home at our county seat. Surrounded by volunteers, county advocates and elected officials who have worked hard to remind us of our past, present and future, is my happy place!

In true “Back to the Future” fashion, our clock tower was struck years ago by a lightning storm. Today, we jumped back to our present and to our future, with a renewed clock and brighter future! Marty McFly wasn’t there, but General George Washington was! His enthusiasm and endorsement was priceless!

I am thrilled to be #2 on the Ballot behind James Bailey for Cabarrus County Commissioner. The order was set before the Primary by flipping a coin to decide clockwise or counterclockwise, then pulling a letter for the starting point. This year's letter was G and went in reverse order. That stays that way for the Primary and General Election.

Many important local decisions are being made in November.

Make sure to turn the ballot over for Property Tax Limits and School Bonds.
