George O. Sandfield was a 44-year member of Alert Hook Ladder & Engine Co. No. 1 at the time of his death. He suffered cardiac arrest while standing by at the firehouse, waiting for the trucks to return from an alarm. He died on December 11, 1987.

Today, the Town of Clarkstown and the Congers Fire Department honored George’s memory with the dedication of New York Avenue at Butler Street in Congers.

Nearly 39 years after his passing, George’s service and sacrifice to the Congers community have not been forgotten. This street dedication will serve as a lasting tribute to his 44 years of dedicated service to the Congers Fire Department and the community he served.

25 years later, we remember. 🇺🇸

Today, we honor the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the countless firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, military members, and civilians who answered the call.

We remember their courage. We remember their sacrifice. We will never forget.

As we approach the anniversary of September 11th, we encourage everyone to take a few moments to listen to Bob’s story as he reflects on his experience as a firefighter during 9/11.

Bob is a member of our neighboring company, New City Fire Engine Co. No. 1. We thank them for sharing his firsthand account and helping ensure these stories and the sacrifices of September 11th are never forgotten.

Smoke From Canadian Wildfires Affecting New York

Smoke from ongoing wildfires in Canada continues to impact air quality across parts of New York. Even if you don't see flames nearby, wildfire smoke can travel hundreds of miles and create unhealthy conditions.

Residents are encouraged to:
• Limit prolonged outdoor activity if the air appears smoky or the Air Quality Index (AQI) is elevated.
• Keep windows and doors closed when smoke levels are high.
• Use air conditioning on the recirculate setting if available.
• Individuals with asthma, heart or lung disease, older adults, and young children should take extra precautions.
