On October 15, 1954, Hurricane Hazel made landfall in Cherry Grove, devastating the Grand Strand. The storm surge and flooding, combined with winds exceeding 100 miles per hour, destroyed hundreds of buildings along the coast. Worried that people would think the Grand Strand had been completely wiped out, the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce launched a nationwide promotional campaign to let people know that the beach would be ready for the next summer season. New buildings and hotels were built along the water, dramatically changing the skyline of the coast to what we know now today.

Fall means that it’s time to harvest our sweet potatoes. Native to South America, sweet potatoes were brought to Africa, Europe and North America during the Columbian Exchange during the 15th and 16th centuries. They are a great source of calories and vitamins, store well over the cold months when other fresh food isn’t being harvested, and, of course, taste very sweet. American sweet potato recipes for puddings, pies, casseroles and even biscuits date back to the early colonial period. Join us at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to learn more about local crops and see demonstrations on the wood-burning stove in our farmhouse kitchen.

The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by Sawgrass on Saturday, October 17th, at 1:00 PM.
Since forming in 1998, Sawgrass has become a longtime fixture in the bluegrass community, known for its distinctive sound, energy, and deep connection to the local music scene.
The current lineup includes founding member Jody Harrison on guitar and vocals, along with Rich Viso on banjo and vocals, affectionately known as “Dr. Banjo,” who has been with the band for nearly 20 years, and multi-talented bassist and sound engineer Corey Merchant. In 2024, the band welcomed Corey Anderson on vocals, whose exceptional voice brings a dynamic new dimension to the group.
Sawgrass frequently features Grammy-nominated musician Jenni Lyn Gardner on mandolin and vocals. With more than two decades of professional experience and an international touring career, Gardner brings a wealth of musicianship and performance experience to the group. Her background in roots music, touring, and music diplomacy adds another layer to Sawgrass’s sound and live performances.
The group puts its own unique spin on a diverse repertoire, including jamgrass favorites, Grateful Dead music, traditional bluegrass standards, and original songs. Their monthly residency at Chanti’s Pizza, a beloved local venue in downtown Conway, reflects their longstanding connection to the community. With a sound that bridges bluegrass, roots, and improvisational music, Sawgrass continues to bring its own character and energy to the local music scene.
The program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street, Conway, SC 29526. No tickets or reservations required. For more information, call 843-915-5320 or email [email protected]. To view a full list of scheduled programs, visit the museum website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.
