Open burning - like campfires, fire pits and burning yard waste - releases smoke and emissions directly into the air. Before you strike a match, make sure you’re following South Carolina’s regulations:

• Allowed (if local ordinances permit): Yard trimmings, barbecues, campfires, and bonfires using only untreated wood.
• Illegal to Burn: Plastics, tires, paint, household cleaners, and construction debris.
• Live in city limits? Check with your local government before burning.
• Outside city limits? Notify the S.C. Forestry Commission before you burn

Help keep South Carolina’s air clean! Learn more at des.sc.gov/openburning.

Butterflies and birds might get all the pollinator glory, but bats do beautiful things, too! 🦇💚

Did you know bats help forests grow?

Fruit-eating bats spread seeds as they travel, helping new trees and plants take root, forests regenerate, and ecosystems thrive.

This Bat Appreciation Month, we're celebrating these unsung helpers and the important role they play in keeping our planet beautiful.

Before you toss those Halloween treats, party leftovers, or extra ingredients, think about how you can save, share, or repurpose them instead. 🍎🥧

A little planning can keep good food out of the landfill and make your Halloween a little less spooky. 👻
