“The number one rule of surviving a gunfight is: Don’t be there.
The number two rule of surviving a gunfight is: Have a gun.”
Those two rules sound simple, but there is a lot behind each of them.
RULE #1: DON’T BE THERE.
The best defensive encounter is the one that never happens.
Situational awareness isn't paranoia. It means paying attention to your surroundings, recognizing when something doesn't look right, and being willing to leave before a situation becomes dangerous.
You don't need to win an argument with a stranger. You don't need to prove that you have a right to stand where you're standing. If you can safely walk away from a confrontation, walk away. If a place or situation is beginning to feel unsafe, leave.
Your fi***rm should never make you more willing to enter or remain in a dangerous situation. It should make you more conscious of your responsibility to avoid one.
Avoidance isn't cowardice. If everyone you care about goes home safely because you recognized trouble early enough to stay out of it, you won.
RULE #2: HAVE A GUN.
Rule #1 sometimes fails.
You don't control when or where another person may decide to threaten you or someone you love. A defensive fi***rm locked in your safe at home cannot help you when you're somewhere else.
That's why, if you've made the decision to carry, consistency matters. Carry lawfully. Carry safely. Carry a fi***rm you know how to operate. Use quality equipment. Train regularly. Understand the laws governing the use of force.
And recognize that carrying a fi***rm doesn't make you a police officer. It doesn't give you authority. It doesn't make you responsible for settling disputes or pursuing criminals. It gives you one additional option in the gravest kind of emergency, when lawful defensive force is actually necessary.
There is another principle underneath both rules:
Your most important defensive tool is the judgment between your ears.
A fi***rm is not a substitute for awareness, avoidance, de-escalation or good decision-making. It is the last layer when those things weren't enough.
Avoid trouble whenever you can. Be prepared for the trouble you couldn't avoid.
