Copiague School District held its 29th annual Hall of Achievement induction ceremony on Oct. 17 at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Inductees were joined by friends, family, administrators and Board of Education members to celebrate this occasion. This year’s honorees include six alumni, bringing the total number of members to 138: Brian Burton Jr., Donna Curcio Farina, Dr. Mu-Tor Flood, Tracey Nixon, Moya Novella and Robert Waidler.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon welcomed guests to the ceremony. “The Hall of Achievement’s primary purpose is to introduce these alumni as positive and motivating role models to keep to our entire school community connected,” she said. “Inductees to the Hall of Achievement inspire our students to reach for high goals. At the beginning of the school year, our incoming freshman students are introduced to the Hall of Achievement and what it means to be a member of that special group of Copiague graduates.”
Board of Education President Brian J. Sales added, “This year’s inductees, like those before them, are outstanding individuals. Each of them has many memories of growing up in Copiague and going through our school system. Now, more than ever, students need role models to look up to. Our inductees fill that role. Every time students walk past the Hall of Achievement, they see what someone who walked through these same halls can accomplish. Tonight, we celebrate not only what our inductees have achieved, but also the example they set for every student who follows in their footsteps.”

Copiague School District celebrated homecoming 2026 with a spirited weekend of events that brought together students, staff, families, alumni and community members for a day filled with tradition, entertainment and school pride on Oct. 17.
The festivities began on Oct. 16 with a pep rally at the conclusion of the school day, energizing students and setting the stage for the annual homecoming celebration. Saturday’s events kicked off with a community parade along Great Neck Road. Board of Education members, administrators, student clubs, members of the homecoming court, class floats, athletic teams, school organizations, students and staff marched to the high school while the high school marching band and middle school band provided musical entertainment throughout the route.
Following the parade, attendees gathered at the high school campus, where families and students enjoyed carnival-style games and activities. The excitement continued on the football field as the Copiague Eagles hosted Smithtown High School East. The home team established an early lead and maintained control throughout the contest, earning a decisive 39-14 victory and giving the homecoming crowd another reason to celebrate.
Fans were also treated to a showcase of student talent during halftime. The high school marching band, step team and varsity cheerleaders entertained spectators with energetic performances that highlighted the dedication and spirit of the district's performing arts and athletic groups.

As part of their Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, fourth and fifth grade students are learning about the influential individuals who have made meaningful contributions throughout history and continue to make an impact today.
Students from Ms. Benavides and Mrs. Ottati’s fifth grade class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School researched notable figures and explored the diverse cultures of various countries. They shared insights into traditional foods, customs and music, bringing the rich heritage of the Hispanic community to life.
In Ms. Ruggeriero’s fourth grade class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School, students also selected an influential Hispanic figure to research, exploring their backgrounds, accomplishments and contributions. After completing their research, they created short written pieces highlighting the lives and achievements of their chosen individuals.
Students then presented their work to classmates, sharing what they discovered and introducing their peers to Hispanic historymakers from the past and present. The presentations sparked classroom discussions and encouraged students to learn from one another while celebrating the many contributions of Hispanic individuals.

What’s your favorite memory as a student here?
I’d say my entire senior year stands out. From the friendships I made, to the classroom activities, to the moments on the athletic fields, it was all filled with unique experiences. I feel very fortunate to have had the kind of high school journey I did.

What made you come back to work in the district?
I chose to come back to work in Copiague because of the comfort and strong relationships I had built with the teachers and staff, as well as the unique demographics of the student body. I always felt at home here, and I’ve always been proud to be part of such a diverse and supportive school community.

What’s your favorite part of your job now?
My favorite part of the job is that it allows me to continue growing, not just as a teacher, but also as a husband, father and person. Every day brings something new, and that constant variety keeps me motivated and engaged. I enjoy the challenge of adapting to different situations and learning from my students just as much as they learn from me.

What advice would you give to current students?
My advice would be to take risks, even when they feel uncomfortable, because that’s where real growth happens. Understand that making mistakes is not only normal but an essential part of learning. What matters most is reflecting on those mistakes and using them to become better each day.

Eagle Shoutout! Want to recognize a former teacher, coach, or classmate?
Ms. Wendy Burns, my Sequential III and AP Calculus teacher, for believing in me not only when I was her student, but also when I returned as a colleague.
Mr. Christian Koenig, for being not only my high school lacrosse coach, but later my co-teacher for many wonderful years.
