Something worth knowing about before November...

Proposal 1 will be on Michigan’s ballot, and I’m guessing a lot of people haven’t heard much about it yet.

Basically, voters are being asked whether Michigan should hold a constitutional convention in 2027 to consider a general revision of the state constitution. This question automatically comes before Michigan voters every 16 years.

A Yes vote starts that convention process.
A No vote means no convention is called and we continue under the current constitution.

One important point — this is not a vote in November to approve a new constitution. It’s a vote on whether to begin the process. Whatever a convention ultimately proposes would still have to come back to Michigan voters for approval or rejection.

One side note on the graphic: the $80 million figure is an estimate, not a guaranteed cost. The actual cost would depend on things like how the convention is structured and how long it lasts.

The graphics do a pretty good job of laying out the basic question. This is one of those ballot items that could easily get overlooked, so it’s worth taking a few minutes to understand what it actually does before November.
