Cordova Then and Now...The Crosby Family
Isaac Bowers Crosby, the oldest son of John and Mary Crosby was born at Hillsboro County, New Hampshire on November 18, 1818. He lived in New York and came to Chicago then to the Galena Trail and south on the Mississippi River. Once in Illinois, he met Elizabeth Marshall. She was the daughter of Charity Golden Marshall and John Marshall. They were married on March 10, 1847. At that time, they made their first home in part of the Armstrong Tavern along the river and rented land from Mr. Armstrong and farmed it. They bought the farm in 1849 which was about 135 acres.
About a year and a half after their marriage, Isaac purchased 200 acres where the Crosby home sat for so many years. The log cabin was already standing on the land and it continued to be their home for a few years but as years passed, they were able to add improvements and comforts, including a cement one and a half story home with two rooms up and two rooms down. They also purchased property in Albany, IL in 1857 and remained there for two years. In 1867, Mr. Crosby erected the brick portion of the home and made other improvements. This large farm house was built a couple of hundred feet or more back from the high bank of the Mississippi River. It was located approximately where the 3M recreational site was.
Isaac and Elizabeth had 10 children.
1. Amos Buell born Feb. 5, 1848 and lived in Chetopa, KS
2. Clara--she married Stephen Sprague.
3. Sarah born 1851 and died in 1859
4. Horace Marshall born in 1854 and stayed in Cordova and took over the family farm.
5. Celia born 1856 and died in 1859
6. Chattie was born in 1858 and died in 1861
7. Ella was born in 1860 and married Henry W. Fletcher.
8. Isaac Fory born in 1864 and married Lucy Mack. He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago in 1889.
9. Hattie was born in 1866 and died in 1888
10. Lottie E. was born in March 1869. She married Elbert Able. She kept detailed journals about early Cordova history. Lottie went to Jennings Seminary at Aurora, IL and became a pharmacist.
Horace and Mary Lamb had one son-Harry who took the property over and died in 1952. The Crosby land was then sold to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Wilson and they sold it to make way for the Cordova Industrial Park.
Information was taken from Lottie Crosby Abel's journals and photos.

This month's quilt is from Bonnie Dengler. It is called Over-Under Quilt. From Bonnie: I purchased this quilt kit at a shop near Rockford, IL in 2013. The fall fabrics got my attention. It was a fun quilt to put together and all the quilting is fall leaves and pumpkins.
