Corning Joint Fire District The Corning Joint Fire District was established on January 1st, 2020, providing fire and rescue. Chief, Randy Brenning
Deputy Chief, Adam Nehring.

Prior to the inception of the Corning Joint Fire District, fire protection was provided by three private fire departments- East Corning Fire Department, Village of South Corning Fire Department and the North Corning Fire Department. On January 1st, 2020, the creation of the Corning Joint Fire District merged the three private independent operating fire departments into one Fire Department entity, operating out of three fire stations, now labeled as:
Station 16 (previously East Corning FD)
Station 34 (previously South Corning FD)
Station 43 (previously North Corning FD)

The Corning Joint Fire District, the Authority Having Jurisdiction, is governed by five fire commissioners who levy a tax onto the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning applicable property owners. Commission Chair, Dave Shaffer
Commissioner, John Clarkson
Commissioner, Larry Eccleston
Commissioner, Stan Gridley Jr

District fire operations are executed by the Board of Fire Commissioners appointed Chief and Deputy Chief. Prior to the formation of the fire district, all three fire departments were operating together under mutual aid agreements and were regularly training together. The purpose for creating the Corning Joint Fire District has multiple points:

1. Improve the fire service for all tax-payers, visitors and commuters in the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning.

2. Eliminate all taxing disparities throughout the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning.

3. Standardize training for firefighters and EMS responders.

4. Standardize Standard Operating Procedures.

5. Standardize and optimize response to emergencies throughout the Town of Corning and Village of South Corning.

6. Standardize apparatus and reducing vehicle maintenance costs through reduction of duplicate or unneeded apparatus and equipment.

7. Increase volunteer staffing quality and availability.

8. Improvement of tax-payers ISO rating.

Tools & rides? Charge outside. 🛴🚲🔧

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

✅ Charge them outside when possible

✅ Never block a door or exit while charging

✅ Use the manufacturer's charger

Thanks for following along this Fire Prevention Week. Safe charging really is a superpower! ⚡

Crews called to assist in a mutual aid response for a tanker initially for a working structure fire. Tanker 20 initially responded to support the water supply of the crews fighting to contain the fire. As the incident progressed there was a need for additional manpower to fight the blaze.

Remaining crews utilized Squad 16, our newest addition to the fleet to quickly respond to the additional call for assistance to bring the fire under control.

These incidents are a reminder of the need of strong mutual aid relationships, and the coordination of a whole region to bring the resources needed to bear and get the job done.

Feels hot? Stop using it. 🔥

Stop using your device right away if the battery:
• is warm to the touch
• smells strange
• makes popping noises
• changes in shape or color
• is smoking

If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.
If there is a battery fire, get outside, stay outside, and call 9-1-1 from outside the home.

It's Fire Prevention Week! ⚡

The Corning Joint Fire District is teaming up with NFPA to promote this year's Fire Prevention Week™, October 4–10: Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.
Phones, laptops, toys, power tools, e-bikes and scooters all run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. They pack a lot of energy into a small space. If they're damaged or charged the wrong way, they can overheat, start a fire, or even explode.
Help us spread the word that everyday actions can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires. Use your charging superpower by making smart choices every time you plug in, and follow along all week for safe-charging tips.

Cheap charger? Don't chance it. 🔌

Use the cord and charger that came with your device, or one approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.

Buying a replacement? Look for a mark from a nationally recognized testing lab, such as UL, ETL, or CSA.

Soft surface? Hard pass. 🛏️❌

Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.

When it hits 100%, unplug it. Leaving a device plugged in longer than needed can increase heat and stress on the battery.
