Gale Watch and Strong Cold Front Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon

Timing and Overview:
A strong cold front is forecast to move through the area on Friday. The primary concern we're watching right now is for gale force wind gusts in gulf waters adjacent to South Texas. Wind gusts to 40 knots will be possible, especially in open waters. In addition to gale force winds, we'll also be monitoring the potential for elevated fire weather conditions, potential wind advisories and coastal flood advisories, all results of strong north to northeasterly winds. The timing of the front has been a bit inconsistent. It could move through South Texas as early as before sunrise Friday or as late as Friday evening. We're currently leaning toward an earlier passage. Temperatures will fall behind the front, but not to levels that would be impactful to most people/activities. High temperatures on Saturday will be in the 70s, and overnight lows Friday night through Sunday night will be in the 50s inland.

Forecast:
Wind: Marine: North to northeast winds 25 to 35 knots with gusts to 40 knots Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. South Texas: North 20-30 mph Friday and Friday night

Seas/Bays: Increasing to 8 to 13 feet in open waters, 5 to 7 feet near the coast and choppy to rough in the bays.

Impacts: Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions.

Coastal Flood Advisory issued October 9 at 9:00AM CDT until October 11 at 7:00AM CDT by NWS Corpus Christi TX

* WHAT...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, minor coastal flooding.
For the High Rip Current Risk, dangerous rip currents.

* WHERE...Aransas Islands, Kleberg Islands, Nueces Islands and
Calhoun Islands Counties.

* WHEN...For the Coastal Flood Advisory, until 7 AM CDT Sunday.
For the High Rip Current Risk, until 7 PM CDT this evening.

* IMPACTS...Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only
isolated road closures expected. Rip currents can sweep even
the most experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper
water. These rip currents can become life-threatening to
anyone entering the surf.

If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of disturbed weather in the Bay of Campeche. There is a 60% chance this area will develop into a tropical system in the next 2 days and an 80% chance for development over the next 7 days. Should this develop, it is expected to move north through the Gulf. It will most likely remain east of our immediate area but could push higher-than-normal swells toward the Texas coast and increase tides and the risk of rip currents.
The windshear along the Texas Coast appears to be marginally conducive and gradual development pushing this tropical system east toward the Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida Coastlines.
Nueces County Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor these disorganized showers and thunderstorms in the Bay of Campeche.
