In a recent feature by the Surfrider Foundation, Coastal Bend Chapter volunteer Tommy Shilts reflected on his years of environmental stewardship, including how earning certification through our National Spill Control School (NSCS) helped launch his involvement in monitoring local beaches for oil and tar.

If you're inspired to make a difference along our coastlines, NSCS offers hands-on training in oil spill response and shoreline assessment that may appeal to environmental advocates, conservation volunteers, and beach lovers alike.

Congratulations to Madhukar Kuchavaram for successfully defending his dissertation proposal, titled “GeoAI-Enabled Framework for Mosquito Surveillance and Vector-Control Decision Support.”

Madhukar is a Ph.D. Computer Science student and Graduate Research Assistant with CBI’s GeoCommunityLab, working under the advisement of Dr. Yuxia (Lucy) Huang. His research combines GeoAI, spatial analysis, and decision support for public health, focusing on mosquito surveillance and vector control. He developed MOSAIC (Mosquito Observations and Surveillance using AI for Communities), an AI-enabled surveillance platform deployed as BuzzWatch and now used by the Corpus Christi–Nueces County Public Health District.

Way to go, Madhukar! 🎉
