Today (October 20), Marin County Fire Department, in coordination with Marin Water, is conducting a prescribed fire operation on Mt. Tam Watershed lands in the Lagunitas Meadow and Pine Point area near the Bon Tempe Reservoir along Alex Forman Trail and Pumpkin Ridge Trail.

You may see or smell smoke in or near Mt. Tam. Please heed all closure signs and refrain from dialing 9-1-1 to report smoke in this area.

During the burn operation, the Alex Foreman Trail through the interior of Pine Point, Pumpkin Ridge Trail between Fish Grade and Redwood Turn, and Pine Point Trail will be closed. Sky Oaks Road will remain open but may be subject to short delays due to smoke and temporary lane closures as fire engines patrol the adjacent burn perimeter.

PLANT OF THE WEEK: Hillside gooseberry (ribes californicum)
Hillside Gooseberry is an easy to grow native shrub that can be found at elevations from sea level to nearly 6,000 feet. It will reach 4 to 8 feet high and 2 to 6 feet wide. The dangling flowers, which appear in spring, are dark pink, purple or yellow. The branches bear spines, so keep this in mind when deciding the planting location.

This plant will grow in part-shade, in sandy or rocky soil, and requires little water once established.

The flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds, and the berries make it a valuable wildlife plant, especially to birds. It hosts several butterfly species, including the tailed copper, hoary comma and oreas comma.

As early as Monday, Oct. 19, the Marin County Fire Department, in coordination with Marin Water, may implement a prescribed burn on the Mt. Tam Watershed. The burn is planned for the Lagunitas Meadow and Pine Point area near the Bon Tempe Reservoir along Alex Forman Trail and Pumpkin Ridge Trail and may cover up to 25 acres.

We ask the community to please refrain from dialing 9-1-1 to report smoke in this area. The operation may continue for additional days, if needed, to complete work in the planned areas.

This date is tentative as all burn operations are dependent on favorable weather, fuel conditions and air quality. As a result of the operation, residents may see or smell smoke. As with other vegetation management approaches, such as goat grazing and hand crews, prescribed fire creates critical fuel breaks that can reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and leave less dense, more resilient woodlands behind. ***ATTENTION CENTRAL MARIN COMMUTERS***

Marin Water will begin construction of its Miracle Mile Pipeline Replacement Project next week starting Tuesday, Oct. 20, in San Rafael. This is a two-phase project to replace aging water pipeline. Work on the initial phase of the project will be focused near the intersection of Fourth and Second streets just west of the downtown corridor. Because this is a heavily traveled commuter route connecting San Rafael and San Anselmo, motorists should expect weekday traffic impacts, and allow extra time for travel.

This first phase of underground pipeline work is expected to take two months to complete and will occur just ahead of the City of San Rafael - Government’s Second and Fourth Street Intersection Improvements. Phase 2 will commence after the City’s roadway improvements have been completed. Read more: https://marinwater.org/marin-water-to-replace-more-than-a-mile-of-aging-pipeline-along-miracle-mile-2/

PLANT OF THE WEEK: Wild hyacinth (dipterostemon capitatus)
Occurring in Arizona, California, Utah, New Mexico and northern Mexico, the wild hyacinth is an herbaceous perennial that produces clusters of blue, blue-purple, pink-purple or white flowers. These plants thrive in open disturbed environments and are a common post-fire succession species in chaparral.

The foundation for a pair of 2-million-gallon water tanks is starting to take shape near Sky Oaks Road on the Mt. Tam Watershed as part of the Pine Mountain Tanks Project. This multi-year project set for completion in 2029 marks a generational investment: replacing the District’s century-old Pine Mountain Tunnel for water storage. Once completed, the Gibson Tanks – named for former Board Member Jack Gibson – will bolster the District’s water supply resiliency by improving seismic stability and water quality, boosting firefighting capabilities on the watershed and increasing water system capacity for Ross Valley. Recently, a cohort from the NASA Ames Research Center's Wildfire, Ecosystem Resilience and Risk Assessment (WERK) Initiative visited the Mt. Tam Watershed to learn firsthand about Marin Water's forest health and stewardship efforts. The WERK Initiative is a partnership with the State of California to develop data systems that can help monitor and protect California ecosystems.

Interested in learning what makes a forest healthy? Mt. Tam visitors can utilize One Tam’s self-guided walk to take their own tour around Lake Lagunitas and discover how we steward this precious resource. PLANT OF THE WEEK: Holly leaf cherry (prunus ilicifolia)
Also known as evergreen cherry, this species in the rose family is native to coastal California and northern Baja California. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree up to 15 meters tall, with dense foliage. While the cherry produced is edible and sweet, it contains little flesh surrounding the smooth seed. It is great for birds, though.
