Need help with an essential home repair?

The City of Covington’s Minor Home Repair Program provides grant funding to help income-qualified homeowners pay for essential, non-cosmetic home repairs that address health and safety concerns.

Eligible homeowners may receive up to $5,000 in grant funding per job, and repairs are completed by licensed, bonded and insured contractors. These are grants, so qualifying homeowners do not have to repay the assistance.

To qualify, homeowners must have owned and lived in their home for at least one year, live within Covington city limits, have current homeowner’s insurance and meet HUD income requirements.

Think you or someone you know could benefit from the program?

To confirm eligibility and begin the application process, contact Karrie Coston at 253-480-2444 or [email protected].

The weather is changing, the rain is coming and the leaves are starting to fall. Karma has already been getting a head start on fall cleanup, and you can too!

Adopt-a-Drain is a fun and easy way to make a difference right in your own neighborhood. Pick a storm drain to adopt, give it a name and help keep it clear of leaves and trash. Keeping drains clear can help prevent localized flooding and keep debris and pollutants out of our local waterways.

And yes, naming your drain is part of the fun. Here are a few names already claimed by Covington locals:

Leaf Lurker
Drain Man
Drainy McDrainface
The Drain of Life
The Basinator
Chili Champ Ben
Shania Drain
Karma The Chameleon’s Catch Basin

Can you come up with an even better one? Post your drains and names in the comments!

Last night, Tuesday, Sept. 22, police responded to a bomb threat targeting Covington City Hall.

The threat was received after City offices had closed for the day, but while the City Council was holding its regular meeting, which began at 7 p.m. The city hall building was immediately evacuated and the meeting was ended as a precaution.

Police conducted a search of the building and surrounding area and found nothing suspicious.

This is the second bomb threat targeting City Hall this month. On Sept. 4, the city hall building and the surrounding complex were evacuated after a threat was called in to police shortly before 9 a.m. A search following that incident also found nothing suspicious. Police believe both threats were hoaxes.

“Whether a threat turns out to be credible or a hoax, we have to take it seriously. The safety of our employees, residents and everyone who comes into the building will always come first,” said Mayor Sean Smith.

“It’s incredibly frustrating to see this happen twice in such a short period of time. These threats disrupt the work of our City, impact our employees and community, and require significant public safety resources. Our detectives are actively investigating to hold the responsible party accountable.”

City Hall is currently open and operating under its normal schedule.
