MANDATORY LIFE SENTENCES HANDED DOWN IN 2021 BOGALUSA SHOOTING

Two men have been sentenced to life in prison without parole for a 2021 Bogalusa murder that stemmed from an online rap rivalry.

Tauj Taplin, 24, and Quardaviaon White, 24, received mandatory life sentences today from Judge Alan A. Zaunbrecher following their Second-Degree Murder convictions earlier this month. The victim’s family was in attendance for the sentencing in Washington Parish.

"While no sentence can undo the tragic loss of a loved one, today’s finality ensures that these two individuals will spend the rest of their natural lives behind bars for a senseless act of violence driven by a mindless online rivalry," said District Attorney Collin Sims.

District Attorney Collin Sims spoke with WWL-TV Tuesday ahead of the St. Tammany Parish budget meeting about the serious funding challenges facing the Office of the District Attorney for the 22nd Judicial District.

State funding can only be spent on prosecutors’ salaries, not their benefits or other state-mandated expenses. With nearly 90 non-attorney employees, the proposed budget cuts would leave our office with just $10,680 annually per non-attorney employee to cover salaries and related expenses with 16 vacancies.

These cuts threaten our ability to retain experienced prosecutors and support staff, prosecute criminal cases, and continue serving the citizens of St. Tammany and Washington Parishes.

Watch DA Sims explain what these funding cuts could mean for our criminal justice system.

SERIAL BANK ROBBER CONVICTED IN ST. TAMMANY PARISH

Yesterday, a St. Tammany Parish jury found 37-year-old Byron Jamal Watson guilty as charged of simple robbery following a November 2025 heist at Fidelity Bank on Gause Boulevard in Slidell. Watson, a repeat bank robber, was tied to the getaway vehicle through sharp police work utilizing Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology and surveillance footage.

Watson’s extensive prior record includes four bank robberies, an aggravated robbery, and an aggravated flight. Due to his history as a habitual offender, he faces a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment when sentenced on November 2, 2026.

"Byron Watson thought he could bring his criminal activities into our community and escape accountability, but he was wrong," said District Attorney Collin Sims. "Thanks to the thorough, relentless investigation by law enforcement, we have finally put a stop to his serial criminal career."

JUSTICE SERVED: Slidell Man Convicted of Second-Degree Murder in 2022 Ambush Shooting

Today, a St. Tammany Parish jury found 22-year-old Deanthony Ashawn Williams of Slidell guilty as charged on all counts, including Second-Degree Murder, Attempted Second-Degree Murder, and Attempted Armed Robbery.

The conviction stems from a cold-blooded November 28, 2022 ambush shooting in Slidell that took the life of a 19-year-old man and critically injured another. Investigation by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office revealed that Williams and his co-defendant ambushed the victims with guns drawn under the guise of a meeting, opening fire as the vehicle tried to flee. In the days following, Williams bragged about the crime via text messages and social media.

Prosecuted by ADAs Christina Fisher and Taylor Nicholson before Judge Richard Swartz, Williams now faces a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without parole. Sentencing is scheduled for December 9, 2026. Charges against co-defendant Corda Williams remain pending.

"This was a senseless, cold-blooded act of violence driven by greed and a complete disregard for human life...Deanthony Williams will now be held accountable for his actions." - District Attorney J. Collin Sims
