We regret to share the passing of Assistant Chief Alan Wright of the Eagle Rock Volunteer Fire Department. Alan was critically injured while serving his community during a swift water rescue incident in June of 2016. Since that time he was lovingly cared for by his wife, Dawn. We ask that you keep his family, friends and department members in your prayers as they mourn his passing.

Hezekiah, our antique American LaFrance fire engine, has officially turned 99 years old!
Purchased by the Town of Covington and delivered to the Covington Volunteer Fire Department in September 1927, Hezekiah has been a treasured part of our department’s history and a lasting symbol of the dedication and service of generations of firefighters.

As we look ahead to 2027 members of the department are already working on plans for a special 100th Birthday Celebration to honor this incredible piece of our history.
And the celebrations don’t stop there! Next year, the Covington Fire Department will also celebrate its 125th anniversary. 🎉

We are excited to commemorate both milestones with special events and activities throughout the year. We will keep our citizens informed as plans develop and details are finalized.

125 years of the Covington Fire Department.

Over Father’s Day weekend, members of the Covington Fire Department attended the Southwest Virginia Firefighters Association’s Annual Convention. The weekend provided valuable opportunities for training, fellowship, camaraderie, and networking with volunteer departments from across Southwest Virginia that are facing many of the same challenges as we are in today’s world.

In addition to attending the memorial service on Friday evening to honor our fallen firefighters, the department also participated in several friendly competitions with fellow departments. The Covington Fire Department proudly earned 3rd place in the Three-Man Dressing Competition, Best Tailgate Decorations, and the Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations also to Andrew Baker and teammate Chris Cahoon of the Selma Volunteer Fire Company for taking 1st place in the co****le tournament on Thursday!

Events like this remind us that the fire service is about much more than competition—it’s about learning, building friendships, and strengthening the teamwork that helps us better serve our community.

If you’ve ever thought about giving back, there’s a place for you at the Covington Fire Department. We are always looking for dedicated volunteers who want to make a difference, learn new skills, and become part of a family committed to serving others. Stop by the station or send us a message to learn how you can join our team.

For the past five months, members from fire departments across Alleghany County and Hot Springs have been participating in a Firefighter I class hosted by the Covington Fire Department and taught by local instructors.
Today marked the culmination of their hard work with the final live burn evolutions. These students and instructors have dedicated countless hours of training, preparation, and effort to successfully complete this program.
A special thank you goes to the Virginia Department of Fire Programs for providing the state's burn trailer, which played a vital role in the hands-on training experience.
We would also like to thank the Covington Rescue Squad, Covington EMS, and Alleghany County Public Safety for providing medical monitoring and standby coverage during the practical training sessions.
Thank you to Covington Parks and Recreation for allowing the use of Casey Field and its facilities for today's training exercises.
Congratulations to all the students and thank you to everyone who helped make this training a success. Your commitment to firefighter education and is greatly appreciated.
