Response to man with a gun call:

The Craig Police Department is aware of a Facebook Post that was posted on one of the Craig Community Chat pages about the police department ignoring a man with a gun call over the weekend of October 4, 2026.

When we looked into this incident, we found that on October 4, 2026, at 2:32 pm the Craig Regional Communication Center aired a REDDI report (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately) to all Moffat County Law Enforcement agencies regarding a party who had gone into a local liquor store in Craig and was acting erratic. The erratic behavior was reported by an anonymous reporting party (who called and left the scene without any identifying information as to who they were) that the driver bought some shooters and was possibly drinking them in his truck in the parking lot. At this time, Craig Police Officers were working an active disturbance unrelated to this matter.

At 2:34 pm, the owner of the liquor store called for his employee that there was a guy at the liquor store acting strange. The owner was not on scene and could not provide further information.

The owner called back at 2:39 pm and stated the male party was just “wandering around” and had asked to use the restroom. When informed there was no public restroom, the male party became upset. Dispatch asked if any weapons were involved in this and the owner said no.

At approximately 2:40 pm, a third caller reported there was a gentleman in the parking lot “freaking out” with some sort of r***e. The caller also reported at the same time the guy was getting into his truck and leaving. This information was given to officers, both officers and deputies immediately responded to the liquor store and the surrounding area. No other details were provided at that time. Officers and Deputies responded to the area of Hwy 13 and Hwy 40 and the bypass road looking for the vehicle. While officers looked for the vehicle another Craig Police Officer attempted to contact the third reporting party by phone.

One Officer talked to the third reporting party by phone at 2:45 pm. According to the third reporting party, the person with the gun never threatened anyone with it or waved it around. The male party was only seen moving the alleged r***e from one location in his vehicle to another location in his vehicle. This reporting party also said the driver was asking for directions to Wyoming outside the liquor store and never made any threats to anyone. Officers and Deputies continued to look for the truck with Wyoming plates.

At 2:55 pm, after not being able to locate the truck in town, a Craig Police Officer went to liquor store and talked with the employee of the liquor store. The liquor store employee was not an original caller. While talking to the store clerk, information was relayed over the radio that Moffat County Deputies had contacted the male party at about 3:03 pm near Hwy 13 and County Road 11, approximately 18 miles north of Craig.

No threats or injuries were reported in this incident and there were no reports of a gun being pointed at anyone or that this male attempted to threaten anyone with it.

The Craig Police Department strives to provide excellent response and service to all those we serve and we are dedicated to being accountable in our actions. All subjects/suspects are innocent until proven guilty through the court system.

Yesterday you may have seen our Craig Police K9 teams (K9 Odin and Officer Baker /K9 Copper and Officer Laehr). conducted some of their ongoing training with some neighboring teams from Routt County (Routt County K9 teams). It is very common for our K9 unit to train with other K9 teams from across the region, to include Western Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. The Craig Police Departments K9 teams train several times per month.

Yesterday they refined their skills with scenarios in criminal apprehension and drug detection. They also commonly work on obedience and socialization as well.

A special thanks to our SRO Sambu Shrestha for acting as a Decoy for the scenarios! This is an important job, and necessary to the training of our patrol K-9 teams. A special thanks is also in store for Brass Key Realty for providing a vacant and safe place for the K9's to train!

Routt County Sheriff's Office K9 teams that participated in yesterday's training are K9 Winston and Deputy Aaron Clock, K9 Cleo and Deputy Travis Bell, K9 Bella and Deputy Jeramie Alley.
