SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATION – BLACK MOUNTAIN

The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Moffat County Search and Rescue, and Craig EMS assisted the Routt County Sheriff’s Office and Routt County Search and Rescue in a search and rescue operation on Black Mountain after a hunter became separated from his hunting party and lost.

Rapidly changing weather conditions compounded the situation, and when the hunter’s companions were unable to make contact with him, rescue efforts were initiated. Fortunately, the hunter was quickly located and safely rescued in good health.

As we head into the fall hunting season, we encourage everyone spending time in the backcountry to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions. This is especially important when hunting in unfamiliar terrain.

Please take the following precautions:

-Check the weather forecast before heading out and be prepared for sudden changes.
-Carry appropriate clothing, food, water, navigation tools, and emergency supplies.
-Let someone know your planned route and expected return time.
-Maintain communication with your hunting party and establish a plan in case you become separated.

Mountain weather and unfamiliar terrain can quickly turn a routine outing into a dangerous situation. A little preparation can make a significant difference.

After 44 1/2 years of dedicated service in law enforcement, we bid a heartfelt farewell and happy retirement to Lieutenant Tim Jantz.

Tim’s career represents more than four decades of service, leadership, sacrifice, and commitment to the people around him. Of those 44 1/2 years, 32 were dedicated to serving Moffat County, including eight years as Sheriff.

Over the years, Tim has worn many hats, held tremendous responsibility, mentored countless employees, and helped shape the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office into what it is today. His knowledge and experience will be difficult to replace, and his impact on this agency will remain long after his final day.

For many of us, Tim has been more than a coworker or supervisor—he has been a mentor, a friend, and someone we could count on.

Tim, thank you for 44 1/2 years of answering the call. Thank you for your service to Moffat County, your friendship, and everything you have given to this profession.

You’ve earned this next chapter.

From all of us at the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, congratulations on your retirement, Lieutenant Jantz. We wish you nothing but the best.
