At the Probation Department, decisions about supervision aren't based on guesswork. We use proven, research-tested tools to understand a person's situation and figure out the right level of support and oversight — for their safety and the community's. Here are a few of the tools we rely on:
Public Safety Assessment (PSA): This tool helps estimate the likelihood that someone released before trial will miss a court date or be arrested again while their case is pending. Judges use it, alongside other information, to make fair and informed decisions about the conditions of a person's release. The PSA is nationally validated, meaning it's been tested and proven reliable.
Offender Needs Assessment (ONA): This tool looks at the changeable factors driving a person's behavior — things that can actually be improved through counseling, training, and support. It helps us direct our most intensive resources to the people who need them most, while avoiding over-supervising those at low risk.
Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment (ODARA): A leading tool for identifying the risk of future violence between intimate partners, so we can respond appropriately to protect victims.
Static Risk and Needs Assessment (SRA): Developed by the Washington State Institute for Public Policy, this tool combines a person's history with a broader look at their current needs to build an effective, individualized case plan.
Using these tools helps us keep our community safe while making sure people get the right kind of support to succeed.
