Two officers from the Creston Police Department and two firefighters from the Creston Fire Department received Life Saving Awards at the Creston City Council Meeting on Tuesday, October 20. CPD Chief Cameron Hale honored Sgt. Mike Walsh and Officer Nicholas Perry, and CFD Chief Todd Jackson recognized Firefighters Jake Winkler and Dylan Barrett for their actions.

On August 16, 2026, medics and first responders were dispatched to the Quality Inn after a report of a car accident involving an unresponsive man. Creston police officers arrived first and began lifesaving efforts. Winkler and Barrett soon joined them, continued CPR, and helped use an automated external defibrillator to deliver a shock to the patient. The first responders kept working with medical personnel when they arrived and during the transfer to the hospital.

Because of their actions, these men were honored for their professionalism, teamwork, dedication, and efforts to save a life. Thanks to ongoing training and the coordinated efforts of Union County Dispatch, Police, Fire, and Medics, the patient's family was present to celebrate this successful life-saving effort for their relative, who was visiting Creston at the time of the incident.

At 10:41 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20, the Creston Fire Department responded to a report of a Total Patcher machine fire at Creston's Public Works Building at 1100 E Mills St. Car 1 and Engine 2 responded but found that City personnel had extinguished the blaze with fire extinguishers. However, firefighters added water to cool the remaining hot spots on the equipment and the dump truck.

The equipment blends an oil-based emulsion with rock aggregate for road repairs. The fire began when employees found the chilly weather had thickened the emulsion and clogged the spray nozzle. As they tried to heat the nozzle, some combustible material ignited, causing the fire. Because the machinery was attached to a dump truck that fed the rock aggregate to the machine, flames scorched the tailgate and dump bed. All Creston Fire resources were back at the station by 11:30 a.m.

At 1:08 p.m. on Monday, October 12, the Creston Fire Department responded to a personal-injury traffic accident at the intersection of E. Clark St. and S. Walnut St. An eastbound Chrysler Town & Country collided with a southbound Kia Spectra5, and both drivers were taken to the hospital. Greater Regional Health's Medic 1 and Medic 2 transported the drivers, while the Creston Police Department investigated the incident. Diversified Towing and Recovery, LLC towed both vehicles from the scene. One firefighter drove an ambulance so both EMS personnel could attend to the patient, while other department personnel cleared debris from the roadway.

At 1:33 p.m. on Friday, October 9, the Creston Fire Department responded to a report of a dumpster fire in the 1600 block of Dogwood. A contractor had discovered debris on fire, with flames rising above the sides of the container. When firefighters arrived, they found that the contractor had already used a garden hose to suppress the fire. However, some material at the bottom of the container was still burning.

Firefighters sprayed additional water on the fire while using a New York hook to move and sort through the debris, eliminating any remaining hot spots. They completed their assignment by 2:10 p.m. Although the cause of the fire was not determined, the windy conditions may have caused an ember to ignite the construction debris.

The Creston Fire Department finished their fire safety visits with students as Fire Prevention Week ended today. On Wednesday, they visited with Mayflower Heritage Christian School students. On Thursday, two ECC classes came to the Fire Station for a tour. Today, we visited another PK, K and 1st graders at Creston Community Elementary School Grades PK-4. So, if your children are asking about smoke/CO detectors, kitchen safety, closing bedroom doors at night ("close before you doze), escape plans and more, know that they were listening. Thanks for the opportunity to share these important safety tips.

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These
batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they
fail. For more info: fpw.org.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for last night's Pancake Supper. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the station. Some guests even got to watch us respond to a fire call!

We also want to thank Fareway Stores Creston and Hy-Vee for generously donating food for the supper. The community's donations will help our volunteers with future training opportunities.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is
warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or
color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away
from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can
overheat and start a fire. For more info: fpw.org.
