Congratulations to Sgt. Hightshoe of the Union County Sheriff’s Office on graduating from Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) school!

DRE training is among the most demanding specialty programs in law enforcement, requiring extensive study, rigorous testing, and practical evaluations. There are roughly 135 certified DREs serving Iowa and only about 8,500 nationwide. Sgt. Hightshoe joins this specialized group, bringing valuable expertise to Union County.

This training is a natural fit for Sgt. Hightshoe’s dedication to keeping our roads safe. Completing it reflects the work ethic he brings to serving our community every day.

His expertise strengthens our ability to investigate drug-impaired driving, assist fellow officers, and protect everyone traveling our roads. This training was provided at no cost to Union County.

As a former DRE, I know firsthand the dedication this achievement represents. We also thank the instructors who share their expertise and uphold this program’s high standards. Their commitment makes communities safer across Iowa.

Please join us in congratulating Sgt. Hightshoe on this well earned achievement!

JOINT PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 14, 2026
Multi-Day Domestic Violence Investigation Results in Arrest and Multiple Criminal Charges
CRESTON, IOWA – The Creston Police Department and Union County Sheriff's Office announce the arrest of Kane Farlow (28) following a multi-day investigation involving several domestic violence incidents, unlawful confinement of victims, threats of violence, and attempts to evade law enforcement.
During the early morning hours of October 13, 2026, the Creston Police Department received a report of domestic violence involving an adult female victim. The subsequent investigation revealed a series of incidents involving Farlow that occurred between October 9 and October 13, 2026.
Investigators determined that on October 9, Farlow fled from law enforcement in a motor vehicle while preventing the victim from exiting the vehicle against her will.
On October 11 and 12, Farlow allegedly committed additional assaults against the same victim at her residence. During these incidents, Farlow repeatedly restricted the victim's breathing, unlawfully confined her, and prevented her from seeking emergency assistance. The victim sustained significant injuries and was eventually able to escape and seek medical treatment at Greater Regional Health Center.
On October 13, investigators received additional information indicating that Farlow continued attempting to contact the victim and had allegedly made threats against her and members of her family. During the investigation, officers developed information suggesting Farlow may have been inside a residence in Creston. Due to the circumstances and potential threat involved, the Union County Multi-Jurisdictional Entry Team (MJET) was deployed to assist. The residence was secured and searched; however, Farlow was not located.
As the investigation continued, the Union County Law Enforcement Center received a report of a motor vehicle crash on 260th Street in rural Union County. Around the same time, law enforcement received information concerning a separate domestic violence incident involving Farlow and a second adult female victim, who was reportedly being held against her will.
Through coordinated investigative efforts, officers and deputies determined the reported crash was connected to the ongoing investigation and developed information indicating Farlow was at a nearby residence.
Personnel from the Union County Sheriff's Office, Creston Police Department, and MJET responded to the area. At approximately 12:11 a.m., law enforcement personnel approached the residence and observed Farlow flee on foot. Farlow subsequently entered a vehicle reported stolen from the first victim and attempted to flee from law enforcement. While attempting to escape, Farlow crashed the vehicle into a tree on the property and was immediately taken into custody.
The second adult female victim was located inside the residence. Investigators determined that Farlow had allegedly assaulted and unlawfully confined this victim in violation of an existing protective order. The victim sustained significant injuries and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
Farlow was transported to the Union County Jail, where he was charged with 15 criminal offenses, including:
• Theft in the Second Degree – Motor Vehicle (1 count)
• False Imprisonment (4 counts)
• Harassment in the First Degree – Threatening a Forcible Felony (3 counts)
• Domestic Abuse Assault – Strangulation with Bodily Injury (2 counts)
• Violation of a No-Contact/Protective Order (1 count)
• Possession of a Fi***rm or Offensive Weapon by a Domestic Abuse Offender (1 count)
• Assault Committed by a Person Against Whom a Protective Order Is Issued (1 count)
• Driving While Barred – Habitual Offender (1 count)
• Interference with Official Acts (1 count)
The Creston Police Department and Union County Sheriff's Office recognize the courage of the victims involved in these incidents and their efforts to seek assistance under extremely difficult circumstances. Domestic violence presents significant dangers to victims, their families, and the community, and both agencies remain committed to investigating these offenses and holding offenders accountable through the criminal justice system.
Both agencies also extend their appreciation to the officers, deputies, and members of the Multi-Jurisdictional Entry Team whose coordinated efforts led to the successful apprehension of Farlow. We further thank Greater Regional Health Center and responding emergency medical personnel for their assistance throughout these incidents.
This investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as warranted. All criminal charges are accusations, and Farlow is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Union County Sheriff's Office coordinated an Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response (ALERRT) training event this weekend at SWCC. The Active Attack Integrated Response (AAIR) component is a 16-hour, 2-day multi-agency training program designed to improve coordination between law enforcement, fire, telecommunicators, and EMS during active threat events. The training starts in the classroom and then moves to live simulations with actors and responders. Jim Stover from the Iowa Department of Public Safety's Governor's School Safety Bureau led the training, along with three other certified instructors.

Agencies participating in the training included the Union County Sheriff's Office, Creston Police Department, Union County Iowa Emergency Management, Afton Police Department, Afton Volunteer Fire Department, Clarke County Sheriff's Office, Osceola Police Department, Harrison County Conservation, Greater Regional Health, and Creston Fire Department. Dispatchers from the Union County and Adair County Sheriff's Offices also took part, sharing scenario details with first responders over the radio. We hope this training is never needed, but we always want to be ready.

What a great evening in Afton!

The Union County Sheriff’s Office was proud to join the Afton Police Department for Big Trucks in a Small Town. This annual event gave kids and families the opportunity to get up close with a variety of trucks, heavy equipment, and emergency vehicles.

One of the best parts of our job is building relationships with the community, especially with our youngest residents. Whether they were trying on police gear, climbing into a patrol vehicle, checking out the equipment we use every day, picking up stickers and coloring books, or simply asking questions, it was great to see so many smiling faces and curious minds.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made the evening such a success, and a special thank you to all of the organizers and volunteers who put together another outstanding community event.

We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

SCAM ALERT

We had a local family come into the Sheriff’s Office today after losing approximately $6,800 to a phone scam.

The scammers spoofed the Union County Law Enforcement Center’s phone number so it looked like the call was coming from us. They called the parents of an inmate currently being held in our jail and claimed they needed to pay jail fees and a “surety bond” before he could be released.

The caller identified himself as an employee of the Union County Law Enforcement Center and instructed them to send money using Venmo, PayPal, and by scanning barcodes to make deposits.

Please know this: We will NEVER call you and ask you to send money to release someone from jail.

If you ever receive a call like this:
• Hang up.
• Do not send any money.
• Call our office directly using the number you know is ours to verify the information.

Unfortunately, caller ID can be faked, so don’t assume a call is legitimate just because it shows our phone number.

Scams like this are becoming more common, and these criminals are very convincing. Please take a minute to talk with your parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbors about this scam. A simple conversation could save someone thousands of dollars.

If you’re ever unsure whether a call is legitimate, give us a call first. We’d much rather answer your questions than have you become the next victim.
