Multi-Day Domestic Violence Investigation Results in Arrest and Multiple Criminal Charges
CRESTON, IOWA – The Creston Police Department and Union County Sheriff's Office announce the arrest of Kane Farlow (28) following a multi-day investigation involving several domestic violence incidents, unlawful confinement of victims, threats of violence, and attempts to evade law enforcement.
During the early morning hours of October 13, 2026, the Creston Police Department received a report of domestic violence involving an adult female victim. The subsequent investigation revealed a series of incidents involving Farlow that occurred between October 9 and October 13, 2026.
Investigators determined that on October 9, Farlow fled from law enforcement in a motor vehicle while preventing the victim from exiting the vehicle against her will.
On October 11 and 12, Farlow allegedly committed additional assaults against the same victim at her residence. During these incidents, Farlow repeatedly restricted the victim's breathing, unlawfully confined her, and prevented her from seeking emergency assistance. The victim sustained significant injuries and was eventually able to escape and seek medical treatment at Greater Regional Health Center.
On October 13, investigators received additional information indicating that Farlow continued attempting to contact the victim and had allegedly made threats against her and members of her family. During the investigation, officers developed information suggesting Farlow may have been inside a residence in Creston. Due to the circumstances and potential threat involved, the Union County Multi-Jurisdictional Entry Team (MJET) was deployed to assist. The residence was secured and searched; however, Farlow was not located.
As the investigation continued, the Union County Law Enforcement Center received a report of a motor vehicle crash on 260th Street in rural Union County. Around the same time, law enforcement received information concerning a separate domestic violence incident involving Farlow and a second adult female victim, who was reportedly being held against her will.
Through coordinated investigative efforts, officers and deputies determined the reported crash was connected to the ongoing investigation and developed information indicating Farlow was at a nearby residence.
Personnel from the Union County Sheriff's Office, Creston Police Department, and MJET responded to the area. At approximately 12:11 a.m., law enforcement personnel approached the residence and observed Farlow flee on foot. Farlow subsequently entered a vehicle reported stolen from the first victim and attempted to flee from law enforcement. While attempting to escape, Farlow crashed the vehicle into a tree on the property and was immediately taken into custody.
The second adult female victim was located inside the residence. Investigators determined that Farlow had allegedly assaulted and unlawfully confined this victim in violation of an existing protective order. The victim sustained significant injuries and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
Farlow was transported to the Union County Jail, where he was charged with 15 criminal offenses, including:
• Theft in the Second Degree – Motor Vehicle (1 count)
• False Imprisonment (4 counts)
• Harassment in the First Degree – Threatening a Forcible Felony (3 counts)
• Domestic Abuse Assault – Strangulation with Bodily Injury (2 counts)
• Violation of a No-Contact/Protective Order (1 count)
• Possession of a Fi***rm or Offensive Weapon by a Domestic Abuse Offender (1 count)
• Assault Committed by a Person Against Whom a Protective Order Is Issued (1 count)
• Driving While Barred – Habitual Offender (1 count)
• Interference with Official Acts (1 count)
The Creston Police Department and Union County Sheriff's Office recognize the courage of the victims involved in these incidents and their efforts to seek assistance under extremely difficult circumstances. Domestic violence presents significant dangers to victims, their families, and the community, and both agencies remain committed to investigating these offenses and holding offenders accountable through the criminal justice system.
Both agencies also extend their appreciation to the officers, deputies, and members of the Multi-Jurisdictional Entry Team whose coordinated efforts led to the successful apprehension of Farlow. We further thank Greater Regional Health Center and responding emergency medical personnel for their assistance throughout these incidents.
This investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as warranted. All criminal charges are accusations, and Farlow is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Subject: Public Safety Notice “Cat in the Hat” Social Media Trend

The Creston Police Department is aware of a social media trend commonly referred to as the “Cat in the Hat” trend and has received local reports involving harassment and threatening content associated with the trend.
The trend generally involves digitally altered or AI-generated images and videos depicting a frightening or threatening version of the “Cat in the Hat” character. While much of the content began as a social media trend or hoax, some individuals have used the trend to create posts or messages threatening others or identifying specific individuals, schools, or communities.
Law enforcement agencies and school districts in other states have recently investigated posts associated with the trend that included threats of violence toward students, individuals, and schools. Some posts have also included specific or personal information about the individuals being targeted.
At this time, the Creston Police Department is not aware of any credible threat to a local school associated with this trend. However, we have received local reports involving threatening or harassing content, and discussion of the trend has made its way into our schools and community.
We want parents, students, and community members to understand that threatening someone through a social media trend, meme, video, or other online communication is not harmless simply because it was intended as a joke or prank. The Creston Police Department takes reports of threats seriously and will investigate reported threats to determine their source, credibility, and whether criminal charges are appropriate.
We encourage parents and guardians to speak with their children about this trend and reinforce safe and responsible online behavior:
1. Protect personal information. Do not publicly share your home address, school, schedule, location, or another person's private information.
2. Do not participate in or escalate the trend. Do not create, share, or repost threatening content involving another person, school, or community.
3. Do not attempt to investigate or confront anyone because of a social media post, message, or challenge.
4. Do not follow instructions from unknown social media accounts, including requests to meet someone, travel to a location, or provide personal information.
5. Block and report accounts posting threatening, frightening, or suspicious content when appropriate.
6. Report genuine threats rather than spreading them. Preserve the original post, message, username, and other available information and immediately notify a parent or trusted adult, school administrator, or law enforcement.
We particularly ask students and community members not to repost threatening content simply to warn others or increase awareness. Sharing these posts can unnecessarily spread fear, increase their

audience, and make it more difficult to determine where the information originated. Instead, preserve the information and report it to the appropriate authorities.
Again, there is currently no known credible threat to a Creston school associated with this trend. This notice is being issued because the trend is spreading rapidly, we have received local reports involving it, and we believe parents and families should be aware of what their children may be encountering online.
The Creston Police Department will continue to work with our schools and community partners and will investigate any reported threats appropriately.
