Knitting is a haven for stress relief and a gateway to mindfulness. The rhythmic and repetitive clicking of needles has a way of calming us down and letting the stress melt away. And you get nifty knitted items as a bonus. And add friends from the community to gather and share this pastime together and get some help on projects and encourage each other and have a fun relaxing break from the chaos of the day. The Knitting Guild Association explains it well and they are a great resource for additional articles on knitting, a source for free patterns, knitting techniques, yarn reviews, events, publications on knitting and so much more! Check it out! Link is in the comments.

Since our "Create Your One Tea Blends" class is this evening, I thought I would do a herb garden segment. So, how do we take care of our herb garden during the Fall? First, harvest the annual herbs such as Basil. Make pesto you can freeze or use them fresh in pasta or egg dishes. But what about the perennial herbs like Sage, Rosemary, Lavender and Thyme? I found a nice article that explains that and answers many questions. The link is in the comments.

PS..Please stop by the Crewe Library and see me (my office is in the back of the library) for some free herbs to take home, such as basil, thyme and more before the 1st frost. Bring a baggie for your herbs and I will take you behind the library to help you locate the herbs in The Literacy Herb and Tea Garden.

Incorporating this one habit into your day can have so many life long health benefits, I ask myself, why don't we all do this? My favorite perk is the improvement of digestion and the evening out of blood sugar spikes. Many people suffer from IBS, bloating and food allergies. These after meal walks can really improve digestion symptoms. And not to mention weight loss potential, especially if you do 2 short walks per day. One long walk is not as effective for losing weight as two shorter walks.
So this article nicely spells out these 9 perks. The season, right now is providing some lovely temperatures. I hope you give after meal walking a try. (Link in comments...a meta rule.)

During this very tough time, when you lose a spouse or parent, it is helpful to have a road map to help you cope with all the to do's. These are mostly financial in nature. Kiplinger Magazine has compiled this useful list. And from personal experience, it is very accurate. And as important, is a list of what not to do at the end of the article.

I will add a couple of things. Get at least 10 copies of the death certificate from the funeral home. Contact the three credit bureaus sooner rather than later. Primarily to avoid identity theft. And I would wait a bit to notify the banks in case there are some bills that auto pay out of your loved one's checking account. Get a handle on how and what and when bills need to be paid first. Once a bank is notified, assets in the accounts are frozen until probate.

I hope this information helps at a very tough time. Definitely get help from a trusted family member or friend or financial consultant. Do not navigate this alone.

Here, the American dream is getting a make-over. We were sold the notional of hyper independence. At 18 or 21, we were to head out of the family house to explore our dreams, make something of ourselves, be independent. But ask yourselves, independent from what? From close family ties and support? From a close knit community and security? We have two major problems brewing, isolationism, and a formidable economic system requiring 2 people to work to support a household. Young people rarely can afford apartments on their own and families struggle to raise children while both parents work. Elderly are often forced to live alone and then later are shuffled into nursing homes where they often die alone.

The trend seems to be coming back to sanity. Housing trends are shifting towards multigenerational living. Or another option, is for families to live in the same neighborhood or in close proximity. So many jobs have become virtual so that many people have vast choices as to where they can live. Quality of life can be improved and resources shared and having family close by can help in weathering the storms of life, but also share in the sunshine. More family dinners can be shared, elders can help with child care, children grow up with tight bonds to more family members and gain wisdom in the process. Elders will have help with doctor appointments and other needs.

It is not easy, it would take understanding and cooperation. Here is an article that offers insight into this idea. What do you think?
