Croton-Harmon Schools This is the official page for the Croton-Harmon School District. This is an informational page only. Both the Carrie E.

The personalized approach to teaching found in our schools makes the District one of the most successful in a county known for the high quality of its public schools. Small class size and an exemplary faculty contribute to Croton's superb reputation. The district has been recognized by the state and the nation for its outstanding programs and services. Tompkins Elementary School and the Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School have been named "Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, and are "project" schools in the Columbia University, Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. Croton-Harmon High School has served as a model and pilot school as new state standards and assessments were developed for higher expectations in student performance. The high school has been named one of Westchester's top high schools and was included in the Newsweek listing of the top high schools in the nation. In addition, the high school has been recognized for its positive reforms in nationally published books on education. The school district encompasses parts of the towns of Cortlandt, Yorktown, and Ossining and includes the village of Croton-on-Hudson. The district population is approximately 15,000 with some 1,700 students attending Croton schools this year. Because of the wide variety of learning approaches and programs, Croton students can reach their full potential, develop the habits of mind and social skills necessary to become lifelong learners, and be able to contribute positively to society. Learning expectations are defined in written form at each grade level and subject area so both students and parents know what to anticipate. Traditional standardized tests, performance-based tests, and individual student portfolios are all used to measure a student's accomplishments. The district provides a full complement of services to each school to ensure that all student needs are met. These include guidance counselors, psychologists, social workers, speech therapists, and special education teachers. A wide array of other learning experiences are also available, including athletics, internships, clubs, and workshops. A vibrant after-school program with classes in science, languages, chess drawing, tae kwon do, and much more is available to elementary school children. A privately run before-and-after-school daycare program is available at the elementary level. A middle school program provides age-appropriate after-school care along with enrichment classes. An extensive adult education program features courses in computers, cooking, art, fitness, and foreign languages, among many others. Parents and community members are involved in school activities as volunteers in the schools and on advisory committees that tackle such issues as long-range planning, wellness, the athletic program, and the arts. A Building Planning Council in each school plays a significant role in the process of decision making that focuses on the needs of each school and has teacher, parent, and student representatives. The school district serves as a gathering place not only for students and parents but also for community members who use the buildings for a variety of events. The District Office is located at 10 Gerstein Street, next to the Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School, near Spencer Field. The District Office contains the offices of the Superintendent of Schools, the Assistant Superintendent, the Director of Finance and Administration, and the District Clerk. The District Office can be contacted by calling 914-271-4713. Parents, students, and community members take great pride in, and support, the Croton-Harmon School District.

“There is something incredibly rewarding about watching a student go from ‘I can’t’ to realizing that they actually can.”

Math can be intimidating for some students, but new CHHS math teacher Samantha Perlman loves finding different ways to make it approachable, collaborative, engaging – and even fun.

Samantha says sometimes students just need someone to help them find the way of learning that works for them.

Samantha is being mentored by CHHS teacher Jamie Rooney.

Welcome to the Tiger Team, Samantha!

Get to know Claudia De Azevedo Medeiros, our new English as a New Language teacher for CET and CHHS!

Learning a new language is a challenge, but mastering grade-level content at the same time is an even more formidable task. Claudia recognized the need for multilingual educators when she moved to the U.S. from Sao Paulo, Brazil, 12 years ago. Since then, her mission has been to advocate for English Language Learners while helping teachers better understand and support students through this rigorous and deeply rewarding journey.

Claudia is being mentored by CHHS teacher Amy Yannarelli.

“Science gives us the blueprint for understanding the ‘whys’ of the world.”

Growing up, new CHHS science teacher Nicole Macaluso wanted to know the “why” behind everything. Her aim is to cultivate that curiosity in her students and to encourage them to ask the big questions that have the power to change the world around them.

Nicole is being mentored by veteran CHHS teacher Kerri Tracy.

Welcome to the Tiger Team, Nicole!

If you heard the roar from the CHHS gymnasium this afternoon, then you know what Tiger Pride sounds like!

Our Tigers brought the energy to today’s Homecoming Pep Rally, capping off a week of athletic games following last Saturday’s Homecoming dance.

Coming together to celebrate as a community is what Tiger culture is all about!

What happens when a math problem comes without instructions? At PVC, math teacher Phil Ranieri says that’s part of the challenge.

Phil gives his Algebra Lab students a new Critical Reasoning Problem to tackle every day, encouraging them to think critically and work collaboratively to find a solution. The problem presented during this lab came directly from an actual college assignment.

Every six days, students have an extra period with their math teacher called Algebra Lab that is geared toward review, intervention, or enrichment.

In addition to daily CRPs, Ranieri assigns math enrichment worksheets every two weeks. Students can ask questions or work through a particularly challenging problem with him one-on-one.

As part of CHUFSD’s Algebra for All initiative, Ranieri says his approach goes beyond finding the right answer and focuses on building confidence. Algebra for All allows students access to higher level math and science courses as they progress.

“Part of the goal is for them to learn to advocate for themselves,” said Ranieri. “That’s what I want to see.”

Welcome to New Tiger Academy!

Our newest educators, who are in their first or second year at CHUFSD, met for the first New Tiger Academy session of the 2026-27 school year as part of Superintendent’s Conference Day professional development.

Over the course of the coming months, they’ll shadow a student for a day, observe colleagues in action, and team up across subject areas to build interdisciplinary lessons for their students.

“It’s about teaching outside of your own four walls,” said Erica Camillo, NTA co-facilitator and instructional coach at PVC.

The NTA is just one more way we are putting the District’s Vision Map into action and growing together as a team.
