What better way to celebrate Spooky Lake Month than training at Fancher Lake? Our Water Rescue Team, along with the Merrillville Fire Department Dive Team, headed out to the Lake County Fairgrounds to put their jack-o'-lantern skills to the test.๐ŸŽƒ

Divers had to follow instructions while underwater on carving pumpkins, helping improve buoyancy, air management and fine motor skills. Exercises like this help shore support work through challenging situations while providing calm, concise directions.

And because it is spooky season, here is a bit of haunted hydrology for you. Fancher Lake is at the heart of many tall tales in Crown Point. Local folklore speculates horses disappeared into the lake, later reappearing in Cedar Lake through a tunnel between the two.๐Ÿ‘ป

๐ŸŽ‰ Congratulations on 25 Years of Career Service! ๐ŸŽ‰

Today weโ€™re proud to recognize Battalion Chief Scott Abraham (Turn 1) and Firefighter-Paramedic Bryan Bodamer (Turn 3), who both mark 25 years of full-time career service with our department!

Their dedication goes back even further. Scott first joined us as a volunteer firefighter in 1997, and Bryan began as a volunteer in 1999. For nearly three decades, theyโ€™ve answered the call for this community.

Thank you, Chief Abraham and FF/PM Bodamer, for your commitment, leadership, and service. Hereโ€™s to you both!

Our team is elite, but not even our firefighters could have extinguished the good vibes at this yearโ€™s Fire Prevention Open House! Thank you to our community partners who attended, everyone who showed up and our team who carefully planned another successful event. See you again next year!๐Ÿš’๐ŸŒŸ

Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Cusack is one of the members deployed with Indiana USAR Task Force #1 in support of Hurricane Isaias. We're thinking of DC Cusack and the rest of the INTF1 Team as they travel down south. Thank you for everything you do to serve our community at home and while deployed.

It was a big day for the Crown Point Fire Department!

Today, Thursday, Oct. 8, we welcomed our newest firefighter Matt Kooy as he took his oath of office during the Board of Public Works and Safety meeting.

Kooy was issued Badge No. 90, becoming the 23rd firefighter hired under Mayor Pete Land. He will be assigned to Turn 3, serving under Battalion Chief Joe Ferrantella.

Kooy brings 16 years of fire service experience to the Crown Point Fire Department. He began his career in 2010 as a volunteer with the Munster Fire Department, where he served until 2015. He volunteered with the Lowell Fire Department from 2015 to 2020. In 2013, he began his full-time career with the Gary Fire Department, where he served until 2026.

Welcome to the CPFD family, FF Kooy!๐ŸŒŸ

Also during the meeting, longtime Crown Point firefighter Josh McBurney was promoted to lieutenant.

McBurney has been with the department for 12 years as a firefighter, paramedic and diver. He currently serves as the CPFD Dive Team Leader, responsible for leading personnel during complex and challenging water-rescue operations. The role strengthened his leadership, communication, teamwork and decision-making in some of the most demanding circumstances.

Congratulations, Lt. McBurney!๐ŸŽ‰

Our community risk reduction efforts are typically seen mostly in fire prevention, however it's just as important to have healthcare outreach. In May 2025, the Crown Point Fire Department began piloting our Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program, to help address gaps in healthcare by identifying community members who need non-emergency healthcare and wellness services.

Although we are currently focused on Fire Prevention Week it also is MIH Week, so we want to take a moment to recognize the members of our team who have been instrumental in this program.

FF Kevin LaDuke started the program by applying for grants and continues to report our progress to the State and Lake County to maintain our funding. Kevin also is our main contact with Franciscan Crown Point.

FF Dale Holsti visits homes and makes a direct, positive impact on our residents. FFs Holsti and LaDuke have been our most active MIH team members.

FF Gabe Azcona, FF Brett Wisenbaugh, FF Jon Luczak and FF Amy Early make patient visits, solve issues at homes and connect our patients to needed resources while following up on MIH patients.

FF Brandi Chavero recently began riding along with our MIH Team.

EMS Division Chief Erik Schmitt administers our MIH program and works hard to get this team the resources they need.

We're so grateful for our MIH Team and the work they put into keeping our community healthy. We're also immensely grateful for our community partners, including First United Methodist Church of Crown Point, who answer the call when we need helping hands.
