Last week, the Governor’s Commission on Hispanic and Latin American Community Affairs held its 2026 Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Carroll Community College.
On October 1, Special Secretory Y. Maria Martinez, Administrative Director Silvia Decja, Chair Gabriela “Gaby” Argoti-Fernandez, and members of the Commission welcomed community members to a Community Resource Fair, connecting Hispanic and Latino Marylanders with local and statewide resources, programs, and services.
Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed music, dance performances, and opportunities to connect with community organizations and leaders. The celebration continued with a dinner reception that brought together community leaders, elected officials, and partners to celebrate Hispanic and Latino roots.
As Maryland continues to celebrate the 250th anniversary, the Commission also wanted to create something meaningful to mark this important moment. The commemorative pin presented to guests was designed with intention. The six stars honor the six workers whose lives were tragically lost in the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a reminder of the lives, labor, and sacrifice that too often go unseen, but are deeply woven into the fabric of Maryland.
It was a meaningful celebration of heritage, communities, and the many contributions that continue to shape Maryland’s future.
