The CUS Decomposition Analysis Team, AKA Body Farm, Is Back in Action!
The CUS Body Farm Research TEAM has officially begun another round of decomposition analysis! This year, Dr. Holt's Health Science and Mrs. Horton's Criminal Justice students are collaborating to explore the fascinating intersection of human anatomy, forensic science, and criminal investigation.
Through this unique, hands-on research experience, students are investigating the science of decomposition and its importance in real-world forensic investigations. Over the course of the project, students will collect and analyze data, document physical changes, monitor environmental conditions, and examine the role of insects and other biological factors in the decomposition process.
The Science Behind the Investigation: Students are learning how forensic investigators use decomposition patterns, environmental evidence, and insect activity to help estimate the postmortem interval (PMI)βthe time elapsed since death. They are also discovering why careful observation, accurate documentation, and scientific reasoning are essential when investigating a potential crime scene.
Two Pathways, One Investigation!
This year's collaboration between Health Science and Criminal Justice allows students to approach the same evidence from different professional perspectives. Health Science students apply their knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and biological processes, while Criminal Justice students explore crime scene investigation, evidence documentation, and forensic procedures.
Our Research in Progress:
First Set of Photos: The initial observations from the beginning of this semester's decomposition research.
Second Set of Four Photos: Our latest observations as of October 15, 2026, documenting the changes that have occurred since the investigation began. As the project continues, students will compare their findings, identify patterns, develop hypotheses, and use evidence to support scientific conclusions.
This is more than a classroom experimentβit's an opportunity for students to experience how medical science and criminal justice work together to answer questions, solve problems, and uncover evidence.
Stay tuned as our student investigators continue to uncover the science behind decomposition!
