Italian-American Heritage Month is celebrated annually throughout October to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Italian immigrants and the more than 26 million Americans of Italian descent. If you are of Italian descent, make sure your family history, traditions, and values stay alive. Tell stories that have been passed down, show old pictures, and cook up a big traditional Italian meal.

Today we remember the brutal attacks carried out in Israel by Hamas terrorists three years ago. We honor the lives lost, the families torn apart and reaffirm our commitment to stand by those who have been affected by the alarming rise of antisemitism in communities throughout New York State.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and provide support for victims and survivors of domestic violence. If you or a loved one are in danger, help is available: 24/7 National Domestic Violence Hotline: (800) 799-7233.

At the Outerbridge, we said what Staten Islanders already know. The bridge is nearly 100 years old, and about 14 million vehicles a year cross it in the tolled direction alone. The lanes are tight, and one truck can stop traffic. The new Goethals proved a modern crossing can be built. The Port Authority’s own plan does not start a replacement until the 2036 capital plan. Staten Island cannot wait another 10 years. The Outerbridge should be next.

“I promise you, as governor, we will get that bridge done because it is a vital transportation link,” Blakeman said.

In October, we wear pink. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month gives us the opportunity to educate, promote early detection and show our support for the brave women who battle breast cancer.

On Gold Star Mother’s Day we honor the mothers who gave the most a parent can give: a child who died serving our nation. To every Gold Star mother and family on Staten Island and across this country: we remember your son or daughter, and we are grateful for your strength.
