This afternoon deputies were dispatched to Sidney Park Rd for a report of a male who rolled his vehicle but was uninjured. Deputies quickly learned that the driver had driven straight off the roadway, instead of following the curve in the road. Had it not been for some rocks piled up, the vehicle would have instead hit a new house being constructed.

Due to the crash being a rollover, deputies requested that Custer Ambulance Service, Inc. check the driver out. After refusing medical care, the male was run through Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was subsequently arrested for DUI.

The Custer County Sheriff's Office offers our deepest sympathy to the men and women of the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office and Deputy Katherine Frank's loved ones.

Passing of Deputy Katherine Frank -

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office announces with profound sadness the passing of Deputy Katherine Frank, age 26, earlier today. Deputy Frank was surrounded by her family and loved ones in her final moments. In her final act of service and generosity, she became an organ donor, continuing to help others even in her passing. Katherine worked at the South Dakota State Penitentiary from September 2022 until being hired with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office in June 2024.

Deputy Frank’s death is a significant loss to our agency and to the broader law enforcement community in and around Sioux Falls. She served the citizens of Minnehaha County with professionalism, humility, and dedication. Her absence will be felt deeply by all who have had the privilege of working alongside her.

A memorial has been established at the Law Enforcement Center located at 320 W. 4th St., Sioux Falls, SD, for those who wish to pay their respects. The Sheriff’s Office will also continue maintaining a presence at the hospital as we support her family during this difficult time.
Further information regarding funeral services, honors, and departmental arrangements will be provided as soon as it becomes available.

Deputy Frank served with dignity and heart. Her service made a meaningful difference, and her impact will remain with us always.

CUSTER COUNTY COMMISSION PRESS RELEASE
COUNTY BURN BAN RESCINDED
September 18, 2026
The Custer County Commission Chair has authorized rescinding the Countywide Burn Ban at 8:00 AM on September 19, 2026.
The US Forest Service Stage 2 restrictions are still currently in place.
Despite the lifting of the burn ban, all existing South Dakota Wildland Fire regulations remain fully in effect. This includes restrictions governing the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District and provisions outlined in County Ordinance 20. Residents are reminded that burn permits for slash/burn piles have been invalid for some time and will not be reinstated until at least November.
The Commission emphasizes that it retains the authority to reinstate a countywide burn ban at any time should conditions deteriorate, particularly upon recommendation from fire officials and partner agencies.
Finally, the public is reminded that individuals who start fires are legally responsible for any resulting damage. Residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to educate themselves and strictly adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and safety precautions before engaging in any activity that could ignite a fire.
The Commission appreciates the community’s continued cooperation and commitment to wildfire prevention. Protecting our forests, property, and neighbors is a shared responsibility.
