🎉 Happy 107th birthday, LWV Texas! 🎉

On Oct. 19th, 1919, Texas suffragists gathered at the St. Anthony Hotel in San Antonio for a “Victory Convention.” Their fight for the vote was won, so they dissolved the Texas Equal Suffrage Association and formed something new: the League of Women Voters of Texas. Five local Leagues were founded that same day, in San Antonio, Houston, Galveston, Austin, and El Paso.

Fun fact: Texas women didn’t wait. LWV Texas organized four months before the national League was founded in February 1920.

Our first president, Jessie Daniel Ames of Georgetown, made voter education the League’s top priority. Since then, we’ve helped win the right for Texas women to serve on juries, made our Voters Guide accessible to voters in multiple languages, and kept doing what we’ve always done: giving every Texan the nonpartisan information they need to vote with confidence.

107 years later, the mission hasn’t changed. With the 2026 Midterm Election just weeks away, there’s no better way to celebrate than to make your plan to vote.

Protecting Voters is part of what we do. If you registered or updated your address for registration via DPS online, check your registration at votetexas.gov. Can't find it? Ask for a provisional ballot. Harris County has processed all their delayed DPS registrations.

Along with TCRP, LWV Texas has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against DPS and the Texas Secretary of State to enforce the 2021 settlement we secured in Stringer v. Hughs, protecting online voter registration updates through DPS. Approximately 8 million Texans have updated their registrations this way since 2021!

For months, voters reported that their registration updates were not going through after using DPS’s online system. We sent DPS and SOS a demand letter in July and sought answers through public records requests. Both agencies insisted they were complying with the 2021 settlement, even as voters continued to face delays.

The State is still withholding key records while counties scramble to process hundreds of thousands of delayed registrations right before the election. We’re demanding accountability for every Texas voter!

Were you one of the thousands of Texans whose voter registration was affected by the DPS online portal issue?
