It’s starting to get cold, and I wanted to do something meaningful and useful this season. I’ll be passing out beanies, scarves, and gloves to our homeless veterans at the VA Stand Down events — one in Fort Worth and another in Denton County.

They’re expecting over 300 veterans at each site, so I’m preparing for around 600 total. I’m asking for a little help from my friends — nothing is too small, even $2 or $5 helps make a difference.

Calling All Local Businesses – Support the VA Stand Down Event for Veterans This Thursday VA North Texas Health Care System Denton

Hello everyone,

We’re reaching out to local business owners and community partners who would like to give back to our veterans. This Thursday, the VA Denton County will be hosting a Stand Down event to support homeless and at-risk veterans.

We’re looking for anyone who would like to donate or provide free services, such as:
• Catering or food
• Haircuts
• Clothing, blankets, beanies, and gloves
• Bottled water
• Healthcare insurance sign-up assistance
• Monetary or supply donations

This is a great opportunity to show appreciation for those who’ve served our country and help veterans in need this season.

Cathay Williams (September 1844 – 1893) was an African-American soldier who enlisted in the United States Army under the pseudonym William Cathay. She was the first Black woman to enlist, and the only documented woman to serve in the United States Army posing as a man during the American Indian Wars.

Today, we had a special visit from the Belgium Basketball Team, who are part of the Youth Sports Exchange USA! They toured the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, and it was wonderful sharing the inspiring legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen with them.

Juneteenth has been celebrated for more than a century in the U.S., but it officially became a federal holiday in 2021. Juneteenth celebrates the liberation of African Americans from slavery in 1865. On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger of the Union Army delivered the news that the Civil War had ended to Texas, thus freeing the final enslaved people in the U.S.
