There is power in the words we speak, especially the words we speak about ourselves, our children, and our community.

Affirmations are more than positive words. They are intentional reminders of who we are, what we value, and what we believe is possible. When repeated daily, affirmations can help us focus on hope, purpose, confidence, unity, and the future we are working together to create.

Joppa-Joppee has a rich history built on faith, family, resilience, determination, and community. Generations before us believed in something greater, and today we have the responsibility to continue speaking life into the place we call home.

We encourage every resident, family, young person, elder, church, and community supporter to say the Joppee Affirmation daily.

Say it in the morning. Say it at community gatherings. Say it until the words become part of how we see ourselves and our neighborhood.

Our words matter. Our mindset matters. Our community matters.

When we affirm Joppee, we remind ourselves that our history is worth preserving, our people are worth investing in, and our future is worth building.

Speak it. Believe it. Live it.

In southeast Dallas, a deteriorating school could finally be on its way to becoming a new community center — if Joppa neighbors are also OK with a nearby recycling company building a new facility.

Mollie Taylor Stevenson Jr. runs cattle inside the Houston city limits, close enough to NRG Stadium that on a big Sunday you can hear the crowd from the pasture.

Her great-grandfather, Edward Ruthven Taylor, bought the place in 1875. Six hundred and forty acres at Pierce Junction off Almeda Road, back when that was country and Houston was somewhere else entirely. The account the family keeps is that he was persuaded to buy it by Ann George, a woman who had been enslaved by the family and who nursed him through an illness. She and Edward raised six children on that ground, and those children were among the first Black Texans to be given a college education. Houston grew out and around the ranch and never took it. It holds the Texas Century Ranch designation, and the Congressional Record notes it as the only African American owned ranch in Texas carrying that designation.

The line came down to Mollie Taylor Stevenson Sr., born in 1911, and to her daughter Mollie Jr., born in 1946. In 1988 the two of them opened the American Cowboy Museum right there on the ranch, so that children could come out and stand next to a horse and learn the part of the western story that got left out of the schoolbooks, the Black and Hispanic and Native and women's part of it.

In November of 2001 the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame up in Fort Worth inducted both of them, mother and daughter, in the same class. The hall records them as the first living African Americans it ever put in.

A hundred and fifty years, one family, one piece of Houston dirt. The skyline changed. The traffic changed. They did not.

A Juneteenth-themed playground has been specifically designed for the Joppa-Joppee Community; a space that celebrates our history, honors our legacy, and creates opportunities for generations to come. This playground will be intentionally equipped and designed to serve all ages and abilities, including toddlers, children, individuals with disabilities, families, and seniors.

The total cost of the playground equipment alone is $206,761.86.

We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a matching grant of $103,381.00!
