Across borders, cultures and generations, we share a fundamental aspiration: to live with dignity, in peace, and with the opportunity to build a better future.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals give that aspiration a common frameworkโ€”ending poverty, advancing equality, protecting our planet and building peaceful, inclusive societies.

The International Peace Commission shares โ€œWe The Peopleโ€ for the Global Goals as a reminder that progress depends on participation at every level. Governments carry essential responsibilities, while communities, businesses, educators and civil society each have a contribution to make.

For IPC and the Global SDG Leadership Network, this means connecting global commitments with practical local action: supporting access to clean drinking water, encouraging education, promoting human rights and creating opportunities for people to lead.

As 2030 approaches, our commitments must become visible in everyday livesโ€”in the services people can access, the opportunities they can pursue and the decisions they can influence.

Watch, share and reflect: Which Global Goal can you help advance in your community?

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œRural Women Farmers Caring for Mother Nature,โ€ recognises their contribution to a healthier, more resilient world.

Recognition must be accompanied by opportunity: access to clean water, education, finance, technology and markets, alongside meaningful participation in decisions affecting their lives.

A woman who spends hours collecting water understands what reliable access would change. A farmer protecting her harvest understands the pressures on local food systems. Their experience belongs at the centre of community development.

IPC encourages leaders, institutions and community partners to work alongside rural women, listen to their priorities and support practical initiatives shaped by their knowledge.

Investing in rural women advances human dignity, food security and sustainable developmentโ€”and strengthens the foundations of peaceful communities.

EVERY PERSON FORCED TO FLEE DESERVES SAFETY AND DIGNITY.

Imagine having to leave your home, your livelihood and the people you knowโ€”without knowing when it will be safe to return.

The United Nationsโ€™ message is a reminder to meet people experiencing forced displacement with compassion, respect and practical support.

The International Peace Commission (IPC) calls for solidarity with refugees and the communities that welcome them. Families rebuilding their lives need access to education, essential services and opportunities to support themselves. They also need communities where prejudice and discrimination are challenged.

Each of us can contribute by sharing reliable information, rejecting dehumanizing language and supporting credible efforts that help displaced families regain stability.

Lasting peace requires addressing the conditions that force people to flee and creating a future in which those who wish to return can do so voluntarily, safely and with dignity.

Human dignity belongs to everyone, wherever they find themselves.

HUMAN DIGNITY CANNOT WAIT.
A child needs safe drinking water, enough food and the opportunity to learn. A family needs security and a fair chance to build a future. These essentials belong at the heart of our commitment to peace.

The 2026 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index, released by UNDP and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, estimates that 1.2 billion people across 108 countries experience overlapping deprivation in health, education and living standards. More than halfโ€”617 millionโ€”are children.

These findings demand sustained attention and practical cooperation.

The International Peace Commission calls for stronger partnerships that connect humanitarian protection with lasting access to essential services. Clean drinking water, education, dignified livelihoods and inclusive institutions are fundamental to communitiesโ€™ ability to thrive.

Community leaders have an important role: listen to people experiencing hardship, identify an achievable priority and work with credible partners to deliver results that can be sustained.

Every child able to remain in school, every household gaining reliable access to safe water and every community included in decisions affecting its future represents meaningful progress.

Human dignity must remain central to how development is planned, funded and measured.

Across the world, humanitarian organizations are confronting an increasingly difficult reality: expanding human needs, constrained resources, dangerous operating conditions and millions of people whose survival depends on timely assistance.

From Sudan's devastating displacement crisis to the continuing humanitarian needs in Gaza, from vulnerable communities in Ukraine to underfunded emergencies receiving little international attention, the consequences extend far beyond political disagreements.

Families need food, clean drinking water, shelter and essential healthcare. Children need protection and education. Humanitarian workers need safe and unhindered access to the communities they serve.

The International Peace Commission (IPC) emphasizes that humanitarian protection must never depend on geography, nationality, religion or political alignment.

International humanitarian law must be respected. Civilians and humanitarian personnel must be protected. Humanitarian assistance must reach people according to need, without discrimination.

We recognize the continuing efforts of United Nations agencies, humanitarian organizations, local responders and communities working under extraordinary conditions.

Yet humanitarian responsibility cannot rest on emergency assistance alone.

The international community must strengthen conflict prevention, invest in resilient local services, support sustainable recovery and ensure that humanitarian commitments translate into meaningful action.

A humanitarian crisis should never have to become a global headline before the people affected are considered worthy of protection.

Peace requires more than the absence of conflict. It requires the protection of human life, the preservation of dignity and the collective determination to prevent avoidable suffering.

Across regions and borders, millions of people are living with consequences of decisions they did not make.

Families are displaced by conflict. Civilians continue to face violence and insecurity. Humanitarian workers are operating under increasingly dangerous conditions. Communities already weakened by war are confronting hunger, disrupted health systems and uncertain futures.

More than 117 million people worldwide have been forced from their homes, while severe humanitarian funding shortages are placing essential protection and assistance at risk for millions more.

In Sudan, the World Food Programme has condemned a deadly aerial attack on clearly marked humanitarian aid trucks in South Kordofan. In Gaza, humanitarian and medical needs remain severe. Ukraine continues to experience attacks causing civilian casualties.

Other crises โ€” some receiving far less international attention โ€” continue to destroy lives and livelihoods.

These are different conflicts with different histories, responsibilities and political realities. They should not be simplified into a single narrative.

But they share one fundamental truth:
Civilians must never become an acceptable cost of political failure.

The International Peace Commission calls for renewed commitment to international law, protection of civilians, unhindered humanitarian access, meaningful diplomacy and peaceful resolution of disputes.

Humanitarian assistance must reach people according to need โ€” not according to geography, politics, nationality, religion, ethnicity or the amount of attention their suffering receives.

The conclusion of the recent United Nations General Assembly General Debate offered a sobering message. Among the many issues raised by 194 delegations, one word stood above the others:

The challenge now is to ensure that peace does not remain primarily a word spoken from international platforms.

It must become protection for the child living under bombardment.

Access for the humanitarian worker trying to reach an isolated community.

Safety for the family forced from its home.
Dialogue where escalation appears easier.

Accountability where human dignity has been violated.

And sustained international attention for crises even after they disappear from the headlines.

The world does not suffer from a shortage of declarations about peace.

It suffers when our collective actions fail to match them.

IPC therefore urges governments, international institutions, civil society, humanitarian actors and community leaders to keep human dignity at the centre of global decision-making.
Because beyond every geopolitical calculation is a human life.

And no human life should become invisible simply because the world has become accustomed to crisis.

NONVIOLENCE BEGINS WITH THE CHOICES WE MAKE - On the International Day of Non-Violence, the International Peace Commission reaffirms its commitment to dialogue, human dignity and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

A culture of nonviolence takes shape in our homes, classrooms, communities and institutions. It grows when we challenge discrimination, reject hate speech, listen across differences and ensure that grievances can be addressed fairly and peacefully.

Leadership carries a particular responsibility. Words can inflame tensions or create room for understanding. Decisions can deepen exclusion or restore trust. Lasting peace requires leaders and institutions willing to protect human rights, uphold accountability and make peaceful participation meaningful.

We call on our Global SDG Leadership Network, partners and communities to put these principles into practice through peace education, community dialogue and everyday acts of respect.

Every person deserves to live without violence. Every institution has a role in making that possible.

As another United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week draws toward its conclusion in New York, the International Peace Commission reflects on a simple reality:
The international community does not lack principles.

We have declarations on human rights.
Commitments against discrimination.
Sustainable Development Goals.
International agreements.
Institutions dedicated to peace, development and humanitarian action.

The continuing challenge is turning those commitments into the everyday experience of people.

A child does not experience peace through a resolution.
A displaced family does not experience dignity through a speech.

A community divided by hatred does not experience reconciliation because the world has adopted another declaration.

People experience our values through what we actually do.
Today, the United Nations marked the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, adopted as a global framework for confronting racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

Tomorrow, world attention at the General Assembly turns again to the continuing threat posed by nuclear weapons and the pursuit of nuclear disarmament.
Different issues. Different negotiations. Different histories.

Yet beneath them is the same fundamental question:
What kind of world are we choosing to build through the decisions we make now?

Peace must become more than something humanity commemorates.

Equality must become more than something institutions endorse.

Human dignity must become more than language written into international documents.

And sustainable development must ultimately be measured by whether life becomes safer, fairer and more hopeful for actual human beings.

Governments have responsibilities.
International institutions have responsibilities.
Civil society has responsibilities.
Communities have responsibilities.

And each of us carries a portion of that responsibility.

The work ahead is not simply to describe the world we want.
It is to make today's decisions consistent with that world.
