Nothing in the history of domestic violence awareness happened by accident, and the founding of The Family Place is no exception.

Today, we mark the arrival of Domestic Violence Awareness Month by sharing a key piece of The Family Place history. Swipe through our carousel to learn about the incredible work of life-long advocate Gerry B**r.

When B**r established the Battered Women’s Task Force in 1978, the cultural forces against her and the effort of fellow advocates to shelter and protect survivors were strong.

When they joined forces with a hotline and referral service to form the Dallas Violence Intervention Alliance (DVIA) — the organization that opened The Family Place in 1978 — their work to shelter survivors was attributed to breaking up marriages. They faced strong resistance from law enforcement, the judicial system, and others.

Despite these challenges, B**r and her follow advocates understood the fundamental importance of their work. They persevered.

Their legacy reminds us that the services and legal protections that survivors can access today exist because someone, somewhere decided they should and fought for it.

Thank you to IICF for supporting Children’s Educational Services here at The Family Place, helping us to provide a safe and nurturing environment where we can address the emotional and educational needs of the youngest survivors of domestic violence.

Our Children’s Education Services include our Child Development Center, an after-school program, a mentoring program, a summer program, and daily childcare. All of these programs are designed to meet the unique needs of children who have experienced trauma, helping them to heal and grow.

Everyday wins—like watching a nonverbal child regain the ability to speak, walk, and feed themselves after a few months of support—could not be possible without contributions like these! 🎉

Your contribution goes towards services like free counseling for adults and children at our Central Dallas Counseling Center and the Southern Dallas Community Counseling Center. Last year, these centers provided 5,279 hours of free counseling to survivors.
