This week, Zach and Zoe moved into their first apartment. 🔑
Last year, Zach, then 17, and his younger brother Chance, 16, came to Fighting Homelessness after fleeing domestic violence in another state. They arrived in Texas homeless, without a parent or stable place to live.
We enrolled them in Richardson ISD under McKinney Vento, but quickly learned how few housing options exist for homeless youth ages 16 and 17.
So they couch surfed.
That left them incredibly vulnerable. McKinney Vento recognizes many couch surfing students as homeless, but HUD uses a narrower definition for housing programs, leaving some youth caught in a dangerous gap between systems.
We helped with medical care, identification, transportation, legal needs, school, spiritual support, and basic necessities.
We celebrated Chance’s 17th birthday with him.
Less than a week later, he was in county jail.
Chance had been wrongly accused and spent 90 days incarcerated before we were able to get the charges dropped and reunite him with family in Missouri.
That is the reality we cannot ignore. For a teenager experiencing homelessness, the distance between school, the streets, and the justice system can become frighteningly small.
Then Zach turned 18, and his twin sister Zoe came to Texas to be with him.
We helped them obtain Texas IDs, enroll in the South Dallas Employment Project cohort, complete their initial training with R&R Ministries, and begin working toward WIOA supported career training and employment.
And now, through HUD supported housing resources, they have a home.
Their apartment is still pretty empty, and we would love our community’s help with bedding, kitchen supplies, bathroom essentials, and other basic needs.

Their story is why we continue to advocate for stronger connections between housing, workforce training, transportation, and economic stability.
Housing plus opportunity can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.
Welcome home, Zach and Zoe. ❤️
