We’re happy to welcome a familiar face back to SMU. 📚
Willard Spiegelman, SMU’s Hughes Professor of English, emeritus, returns to campus to discuss his memoir, “My (Lucky) Stars,” and reflect on the experiences that have shaped his life and literary career.
A distinguished author and former longtime editor-in-chief of Southwest Review, Spiegelman has been an important part of SMU’s literary community for years. His work includes books on English and American poetry, personal essays and contributions to the arts and books pages of The Wall Street Journal.
We’re delighted to have him back on the Hilltop and look forward to celebrating his work and enduring connection to SMU.

A signature that helped shape Texas 🖊️
Signed by Fredericksburg founder John O. Meusebach in New Braunfels, this document reflects the financial and logistical networks that supported German immigration and settlement in Texas. Meusebach played a lead role in organizing German communities on the Texas frontier.

History's first draft, sketched by hand ✍️
These rare works by Dr. Charles B. Gillespie show a portrait of the "Discoverer of Gold" James W. Marshall and Sutter’s Mill, where the discovery took place. Drawn from life in 1849, they depict the very start of the California Gold Rush, making them some of the earliest visual records of the moment everything changed.
They are a small example of the historical and impactful items that will live in the Rees-Jones Library of the American West at Southern Methodist University.
