Last week a jury awarded Durham, North Carolina-based Bethel Family Worship Center Pastor George Bloomer $62 million after determining that The Word Network President Kevin Adell violated federal law by committing racial discrimination, harassment (hostile workplace) and retaliation.
In suing Adell, Bloomer’s lawsuit relied on a Reconstruction-era statute, Title 42 of the United States Code Section 1981:
“All persons within the jurisdiction of the United States shall have the same right in every State and Territory to make and enforce contracts, to sue, be parties, give evidence, and to the full and equal benefit of all laws and proceedings for the security of persons and property as is enjoyed by white citizens, and shall be subject to like punishment, pains, penalties, taxes, licenses, and exactions of every kind, and to no other.”
Following the American Civil War, Congress passed this legislation as part of the 1866 Civil Rights Act to insure equal rights under law.
Bloomer filed his case in October 2022, alleging that Adell shared a racist photo, which Adell did not create, that portrayed Adell as a pimp of Bloomer and three other black pastors.
According to the lawsuit, “Bishop Bloomer and other African American clergy members are depicted as Mr. Adell’s ‘ho’ in this meme.”
