DALTON FIRE DISTRICT AWARDED $273,643.80 ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS GRANT!

The Dalton Fire District is proud and excited to announce that we have been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $273,643.80!

These much-needed funds will allow the Dalton Fire Department to replace 26 outdated portable radios with new all-band, P25-compliant portable radios.

This significant investment will help address identified interoperable communications gaps and greatly improve our ability to communicate effectively with our firefighters, mutual-aid partners, and other public safety agencies during emergency incidents.

Reliable communications are an essential part of firefighter and public safety operations. These new radios will provide our members with improved communication capabilities when they are needed most, helping our crews operate more safely and effectively at emergency scenes.

This grant represents a major investment in the training, equipment, and operational capabilities of the Dalton Fire Department. Most importantly, it will help us continue providing the highest level of service possible to the residents and visitors of Dalton, while significantly reducing the direct financial burden of this critical equipment purchase on local taxpayers.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to FEMA and the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program for recognizing the needs of our department and supporting the Dalton Fire Department.
This funding is an investment in our firefighters, our emergency response capabilities, and the safety of the entire Dalton community.

🚒 Congratulations, LT. Tyler Colby! 🚑

Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Tyler Colby on successfully graduating from paramedic school and becoming a Certified Paramedic with the Dalton Fire Department!

This accomplishment is a reflection of Tyler’s dedication, commitment, and willingness to continually grow and improve as a firefighter and medic. He has put in countless hours of hard work and sacrifice to reach this milestone. Tyler doesn’t just talk about leadership—he leads by example. His commitment to serving others and his fellow firefighters is something we are incredibly proud of. It is about much more than earning a certification. It represents countless hours of studying, training, sacrifice, and commitment. He took on the challenge of paramedic school while continuing to serve his department and the community, and he never lost sight of the responsibility that comes with wearing the uniform.

Congratulations, Lieutenant Colby, on this well-earned accomplishment! We are proud to have you on our team and look forward to seeing all that you will continue to accomplish.

Well done, LT. Colby! 🚒💪🚑

Training. Preparation. Readiness.

One of our full-time shifts recently took on the project of constructing a new roof training prop for the department. What started with an idea turned into a hands-on training tool that will allow our members to work on critical skills in a controlled environment, right here in our own house.

This project is also a great example of what makes the fire service special. One shift took the lead on the construction, while members from other shifts contributed their knowledge, ideas, and hard work along the way. As firefighters, we don't get to choose the emergencies we're going to face. We have to be ready for the call that comes through the door — whatever it may be, whenever it may happen.

That readiness doesn't happen by accident. It comes from training, repetition, experience, and a willingness to continually improve. This new prop expands our in-house training capabilities and gives our members another opportunity to practice the skills they may need when it matters most.

We're proud of the initiative and craftsmanship demonstrated by our members, and grateful to everyone who contributed. We train hard because our community deserves firefighters who are ready when they need us.

At approximately 12:52 PM this afternoon, the Dalton Fire Department was dispatched to Washington Mountain Road for a reported multi-vehicle rollover accident.

D5 was the first unit to arrive on scene. At that time, three patients were reporting injuries. Dalton Squad 1 responded with three firefighters, including one EMT, while Engine 3 responded with two firefighter/EMTs.

Upon further assessment, it was determined that there were a total of 9 Patients involved in the incident, prompting an MCI response.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Dalton Police Department County Ambulance, Hinsdale Ambulance, and Lanesborough Ambulance for their quick response and assistance. We would also like to recognize County Ambulance Paramedic Austin White for his assistance with the MCI on scene.

A special thank you goes to Dalton Dispatch for quickly dispatching additional resources and getting them underway as soon as the MCI was declared.

This incident is a great example of why mutual aid is so important. Through the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies, all nine patients were safely transported to BMC with what appeared to be minor injuries.

We are proud of the teamwork and professionalism displayed by everyone involved.

Thank you to all of the departments, ambulance crews, dispatchers, and personnel who responded and assisted on scene. This is what mutual aid is all about.

🔴 Important date change Tuesday September 1st

A Message from the Fire Chief

Members of our community,

I am writing to inform you of an upcoming Commissioners’ meeting at which our department will present the findings of our recently completed Fire Department Building Needs Assessment, being held at the Dalton Fire District located at 20 Flansburg Avenue on Tuesday September 1st. at 6:30.

This assessment provides an important and comprehensive look at our current facility, the needs of our personnel, and our ability to continue providing the level of emergency service our community deserves. It also identifies the challenges and limitations associated with our existing building and outlines the facility needs required to support the department into the future.

While our firefighters remain committed to serving this community to the best of our ability, our facility must keep pace with the demands of modern emergency response. A safe, functional, and appropriately designed fire station is not simply a benefit to the department—it is an investment in public safety and the future of our community.

At this meeting, we will share the assessment's findings and discuss the path forward toward an updated facility that can better serve our residents, our firefighters, and the community as a whole. We need your support.

Moving forward with a facility that meets the community's needs will require thoughtful discussion, community engagement, and a shared commitment to public safety. We are proud to serve this community, and we believe our firefighters deserve a facility that allows them to do their jobs safely and effectively—and our residents deserve a facility capable of supporting the emergency services they rely upon.

We look forward to sharing this assessment with you and beginning an important conversation about the future of our fire department. Please join us at the upcoming Commissioners’ meeting and show your support for the future of our community's fire service.

Respectfully,

Interim Fire Chief, Ryan Foley

The members of the Dalton Fire Department send our deepest regards for the passing of Fitchburg fire department Deputy chief Patrick PJ Roy

We were devastated to learn that Fitchburg Fire Department and Ashby Fire Department Deputy Chief Patrick "PJ" Roy passed away. Among all his other strengths, PJ was a passionate advocate for firefighter cancer prevention and early detection. He was an instrumental figure in the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy's cancer program and taught hundreds of awareness courses to new and veteran firefighters through the years. In 2019, he was honored at the Firefighter of the Year Awards for his immense contributions to this cause. Our hearts are with the Roy family, his brothers and sisters at Fitchburg FD and the MFA, and all who knew and loved him.
