Happy Birthday to the United States Navy!

October 13 marks the birthday of the U.S. Navy. On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the first American naval force, beginning a proud tradition that continues more than 250 years later.

From the shores of the ocean to the quiet waters of Tarrywile Park, water has always been part of our story. 🌊🌳

While Tarrywile may be a long way from the sea, our park is also a place where history, nature, and generations of stories come together. So today, we salute the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Navy.

⚓️ Happy Birthday, U.S. Navy — and thank you for your service!

Happy National Mad Hatter Day!

October 6 is National Mad Hatter Day—and here in Danbury, the Hat City, we think that’s a pretty good reason to celebrate!

Ever wonder where the phrase “mad as a hatter” came from? In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, hat makers were exposed to mercury nitrate used in the hat-making process. Prolonged exposure could cause neurological symptoms that led people to believe some hatters had gone… well, a little mad!

And here’s a fun bit of hat-making history: traditionally, a hatter made hats for men, while a milliner designed and made hats for women. Today the terms are often used interchangeably, but historically, the distinction mattered!

So, in true Mad Hatter fashion…

Don your silliest hat
Put on some comfy shoes
Head to Tarrywile Park
And keep your eyes open for Alice in Wonderland!

You never know what—or who—you might encounter down the rabbit hole.

Happy Mad Hatter Day from the Hat City!

Ever wonder why Tarrywile has ponds?

They weren’t always there!

The ponds at Tarrywile are part of the park’s fascinating history, shaped by the people who lived and worked on this land long before it became the public park we know today.

Today, they’re peaceful spots for turtles to sun themselves, birds to stop for a drink, frogs to make their presence known, and visitors to pause and enjoy the view.

It’s easy to walk past the ponds and simply think, “What a beautiful spot.” But there’s a whole story behind them.

Next time you’re at Tarrywile, take a few minutes to stop at the water and imagine what this landscape looked like 100… or even 200 years ago.

Sometimes the best park stories are the ones hiding in plain sight.

National Pancake Day is Saturday! And if the weather keeps its promise, it might be the perfect day to stay cozy at home, whip up a big stack of pancakes, and enjoy every buttery, syrupy bite.

Then on Monday…

Time to pay the pancake tax!

It’s officially the first day of fall, which means it’s time for cozy sweaters, crisp walks, pumpkin everything, and Mother Nature showing off a little.

And honestly… Tarrywile Park looks pretty good in fall.

The Mansion gets surrounded by gorgeous colors, the trails become a crunchy-leaf paradise, and the whole park seems to say, “Come on, take a walk!”

So grab your favorite walking buddy, your camera, or maybe just a cup of coffee and come enjoy a little New England fall magic at Tarrywile.

Summer, we love you… but Fall, you really know how to make an entrance!

Today is National Clean Up Day!

And we can’t think of a better place to celebrate than Tarrywile Park!

Our 722-acre park is a pretty amazing place—but keeping it beautiful takes a community effort. From our trails and meadows to the Mansion grounds and ponds, every piece of Tarrywile deserves a little TLC.

So when you are out hiking on our trails today pick up a few pieces of litter along the way or move some fallen branches out of the wat, every little bit makes a difference.

Pick it up.
Leave it better than you found it.
Help protect a place we all love.

Happy National Cleanup Day! And thank you to all of the volunteers who help keep Tarrywile beautiful—not just today, but all year long!
