At tonight's final budget approval, I was proud to have the Boys State delegates selected through American Legion Posts 209 and 304 with us in the chamber.

These young men have spent time learning how government works from the ground up. Tonight you could see and hear the growth they've experienced as speakers and leaders. They carried themselves with confidence, spoke with purpose, and reminded everyone in the room why people step up to serve in the first place.

At Boys State, they ran for offices and didn't win every race. From my own recent experience, I reminded the young men that you win some and you lose some, but it is the intention that counts. What matters is putting your name forward, doing the work, and giving your best every time regardless of the result.

Watching them tonight, I'm confident our future is in good hands. Thank you to Posts 209 and 304 for investing in these young leaders, and congratulations to our delegates.

Tomorrow, August 18th, is Primary Election Day for Broward County Commission District 6, covering Dania Beach, Hollywood, Hallandale Beach, Pembroke Park, West Park, and parts of Davie and Fort Lauderdale.

This is a universal primary, every registered voter can take part, regardless of party. And there’s no November race behind it, whoever wins tomorrow wins the seat outright.

Polls are open 7am to 7pm. Election Day works differently than early voting, you have to vote at your assigned precinct. Look up your polling place, check your sample ballot, and bring a valid photo ID.

Vote for A.J. Ryan, the man with deep roots in this county who’s already done the job as Mayor.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for kids ages 1 to 4, and this year is on pace to be one of the deadliest on record in Florida. We’ve lost too many children right here in Broward this summer. That’s not an abstract statistic to me, I have three kids, and I know that jolt of panic when you can’t see them for a second at the pool.

Broward already offers free swim lesson vouchers for kids 0 to 17, and swim lessons cut drowning risk by an almost 88%. The problem is too many families don’t know the program exists.

As your County Commissioner, I’ll make sure every family who qualifies actually hears about it. This is a fix that already exists, but it can be improved and we need it to reach more people.

On an August afternoon like today, some Broward neighborhoods run up to 10 degrees hotter than others, and they’re the ones with the fewest trees. That’s fixable.

My plan sets a tree planting target for every neighborhood, with real funding to keep them alive, plus more mangroves along our coast for storm protection. More shade, lower bills, real resilience.

People pay attention to national politics, but it’s local government that impacts your flood insurance, your water quality, your property taxes, parks, and whether the road in front of your house gets fixed. County Commission isn’t a headline race, but it’s the one that shapes your day to day more than almost anything else on the ballot.

I’ve spent my career doing this work, not talking about doing it. Record reserves and zero millage rate increases as Mayor. A reverse osmosis system removing PFAS from our drinking water. Stormwater upgrades that actually lowered residents’ insurance bills. Policy that reined in overdevelopment while still growing the local economy. That’s a real record, not a set of promises.

District 6 deserves a Commissioner who’s already done the job at the local level, not someone hoping to learn it on the county’s dime. Early voting ends in three days. The primary is August 18th, and this is the only election this seat gets. Vote like it matters, because it does.

Not everything that matters shows up on a yard sign, but clean water should be non-negotiable.

Dania Beach is one of the few Broward cities using the Reverse Osmosis system that strips PFAS out of our drinking water before it ever reaches your tap. That’s not cheap, and it’s not glamorous, but it’s the kind of infrastructure spending that actually protects your family’s health.

I’d rather spend the money upfront than deal with the consequences of not spending it. That’s the standard I’ll bring to the county.

No adoptable animal in Broward should be put down for lack of space or resources.

Back in 2012, Broward promised to become a no-kill community. We have come a long way, but we are not there yet.

I am A. J. Ryan, and as your County Commissioner I will work to finish the job: real funding for spay and neuter programs, stronger partnerships with rescues, and easier adoption and fostering for every family.

A community is judged by how it treats the most vulnerable, including the animals who depend on us.

I am asking for your vote for the Broward County Commission.

Neighbors,

I don’t owe anything to anyone, and I will never trade our neighborhoods for a special interest’s quick profit.

My commitment to District 6: residents before density, infrastructure that keeps up with growth, developers who give back, and lobbyists who don’t set my agenda. I read the fine print, ask the hard questions, and say no when no is the right answer.

I’ve already done this as Mayor and Commissioner. This isn’t a promise, it’s a record.

Five generations of my family have called Broward home for over a hundred years. I’m not protecting these neighborhoods for a headline. I’m protecting them because they’re my family’s too.

This open seat could be locked up for a decade. Vote early or on Election Day, August 18th.
