Danville Business Alliance
DANVILLE, PA — All aboard for a very special celebration of America’s 250th birthday!
The Danville Heritage Festival will feature America’s 250th Celebration Train Rides on Saturday, September 12, 2026, giving residents and visitors a unique opportunity to ride the rails through the Danville area behind North Shore Railroad’s specially decorated NSHR 2238 Semiquincentennial Locomotive. The North Shore Railroad Company & Affiliates will offer four approximately one-hour passenger excursions throughout the day, departing from the Danville Middle School, 252 Northumberland Street, Danville.

🚂 Train departures are scheduled for:

10 AM | 12 PM | 2 PM | 4 PM

Tickets are $20 per seat, and those planning to ride are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance to secure their spot. Children age two and younger may ride free when riding on a paid adult’s lap for the entire trip, with one lap rider permitted per paid adult.

These are more than just train rides. The September 12 excursions are being held in conjunction with the Danville Heritage Festival with a special emphasis on the 250th anniversary of the United States. Each excursion will be pulled by NSHR 2238, North Shore Railroad’s Semiquincentennial Locomotive, specially decorated to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary. Passengers will board at Danville Middle School before traveling north by rail. The train will turn after the Rupert railroad bridge and make its return trip to Danville, creating an approximately one-hour round-trip experience. The rides provide a fitting addition to a day dedicated to celebrating Danville’s history, heritage and community.
With only four departures scheduled, festivalgoers who want to include a train ride in their September 12 plans are encouraged to purchase tickets ahead of time rather than waiting until festival day. Advance tickets allow families and groups to select their preferred departure and plan the rest of their Heritage Festival activities around their train ride. Passengers should also plan to arrive early. Boarding begins approximately 30 minutes before each departure, and riders must arrive at least 10 minutes prior to departure. Train doors will close five minutes before the scheduled departure time. Seating aboard the train is first-come, first-served. The trains will operate rain or shine, and tickets are nonrefundable.

DANVILLE, PA — What did Downtown Danville look like decades, or even more than a century, ago?

Visitors will have the opportunity to find out during the Time Traveler Tour: Danville Then and Now, a special historic walking tour taking place on Saturday, September 12, at 10 AM as part of the 2026 Danville Heritage Festival.

The approximately one-hour tour will take participants on a journey through more than 200 years of Danville history, using historic photographs to connect the downtown of today with the people, buildings, businesses, and streetscapes of Danville’s past. The tour will be led by Danville native Andy Gutknecht, who was born and raised in Danville and now lives in Philadelphia. Gutknecht has long had an interest in historic photography and, in particular, discovering the exact locations where old photographs were taken.

Using the vast collection of historic Danville photographs shared by John Mazich and others, Gutknecht has assembled a walking tour that allows participants to view historic images while standing at or near the locations where the original photographs were captured. It is a unique opportunity to see familiar Danville streets from an entirely different perspective.

The “Danville Then and Now” tour will begin at the CVS parking lot and travel along Mill Street toward the Montour County Courthouse. The tour will depart at 10AM. As participants move through downtown, they will view historic photographs and compare them with the streets, buildings and surroundings they see today. Some locations have changed dramatically over the generations, while others remain surprisingly recognizable. The tour is designed to give both longtime residents and visitors a deeper appreciation for Danville’s history while experiencing the historic downtown firsthand.

Walking Tour Details:
Time Traveler Tour: Danville Then and Now
Date: Saturday, September 12, 2026
Time: 10 AM
Departure: CVS parking lot in Danville
Route: CVS to the Montour County Courthouse
Length: Approximately one hour
Weather: Rain or shine

Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and are encouraged to bring a smartphone or tablet to view the historic photographs during the tour. A limited number of printed copies of the photographs will also be available. The tour will depart at 10 AM sharp, so participants are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early.

Visitors are encouraged to make a day of their trip to Danville, experience the walking tour, explore the festival, visit downtown shops and businesses, enjoy local restaurants and discover the history that has helped shape the community. For anyone who has ever looked at an old photograph of Danville and wondered, “Where was that taken?”, the Time Traveler Tour offers the chance to find out, while standing in the very places where Danville history happened.
