What is the need?

One of the first questions I often get when recruiting foster families is, “What is the need?”

The truth is, there is always a need.

Children enter foster care for many different reasons. Some may have experienced abuse or neglect. Some may have lost a parent, have a parent who is incarcerated, or have parents who are unable to safely care for them at that time. Every family's situation is different, and there isn't just one reason a child may need foster care.

As child welfare workers, we do our best to identify relatives and family friends who may be able to provide a safe home. But not every child has a family member or someone in their support network who is able to step in, even temporarily. That's where foster families come in.

Our county may not have a child in need of a foster home today, but that can change tomorrow, next week, or even within the next hour. When a child needs a safe place to go, we want to be ready.

The foster families we have in Lafayette County are amazing, and we are so grateful for them. But they have their own families, jobs, and responsibilities, too. They may not always be available to take another child, and not every home is the right fit for every child.

Having more foster homes gives us more options. It helps us find homes that can better meet each child's individual needs, keep siblings together when possible, and allow children to remain closer to their schools, families, friends, and communities.

So, what is the need?

The need is having safe, caring homes ready when a child needs one. The need is having options. The need is finding the right fit for each child, rather than simply finding an available bed.

Even if Lafayette County doesn't have an immediate placement need today, that can change at any time. And when it does, having more families ready to help can make all the difference.

You don't have to be able to help every child. You just have to be willing to help the child who may need you.

🧀 Come see us at the Shullsburg Cheesefest this Saturday! 🧀

Lafayette County Human Services will have a vendor table at the festival! Stop by to ask questions about foster care and grab a sweet treat to break up all that cheese! 🍬

And of course, our favorite puppeteer, John, will have some of his friends there to help answer questions, too! 🐶🦊

As Foster Care Month comes to a close, I want to take a moment to say thank you.

Thank you to the foster parents who open their homes and hearts every single day. Your patience, compassion, and commitment truly change lives.

Thank you to respite providers who step in to offer support, rest, and stability when it’s needed most—you are an essential part of the team.

And thank you to everyone who supports foster care in ways big and small—caseworkers, teachers, therapists, relatives, friends, and community members. It truly takes a village, and these children are stronger because of you.

This work is not always easy, but it is always meaningful. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.
