Here is a link to the website where the minutes can be viewed for the County Planning Commission meetings. These detailed minutes will give you a much better understanding of what is taking place at these meetings if you are not able to attend or Zoom in.

To place an item on the meeting agenda, call the County Clerk’s office at 402.367.7430 or email [email protected]. Agenda items must be received before 5:00 p.m. on the Monday prior to the meeting date. View meeting agendas and minutes on the right side of the page.

With so much going on in our county government, it can be hard to stay on top of it all. Many meetings overlap (especially on Wednesdays), but you can only be in 1 place at a time. Moving forward, we’d like to help our community see what is going on, help make our government more transparent, and encourage public engagement. We’ll do this by highlighting hot topics within our local government. This can include anything from simply sharing a public hearing date, to an explanation on an agenda item and how everyone voted on that item. We’ll also give our Butler County Republican Party’s view from time to time, citing our planks, and explaining our stance on the matter.

This page is run by volunteers who work full-time jobs AND attend these meetings, AND have active lives beyond that. Facebook can be a full-time job in itself if you allow it! Considering that, plus there being so much controversy in today’s world, the divisiveness, and even hostility happening in social media “comments”, at this time, we will be pulling back from commenting as a party.

You’re encouraged to exercise your right to free speech in the comments on our page. All we ask is that you keep it respectful and honest. Living in a free, democratic society, we need to be able to voice our opinions. Disabling comments goes directly against this ideology.

If you’d really like to discuss the ongoing topics with us, you’re encouraged to come to our monthly meetings, the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6:30p at Hruska Library. We have representatives from most of the locally elected parties, including a state senator! These representatives give a synopsis of what happened the prior month and what is coming up. We have open, roundtable discussions with all attendees. You can really learn a lot in just an hour or two.

BUTLER COUNTY PLANNING/ZONING UPDATE!

Today, the supervisors set a precedent that could affect Butler County’s zoning process for a lifetime. 2 members’ positions expire Sept. 30th, Jesse Hough District 2 & Kevin Hotovy District 6. Instead of allowing the general public to apply for these 2 positions, the supervisors voted to reappoint Jesse and Kevin without accepting any new applications. This is after the supervisors were formally asked to open up the application process at a previous meeting. While it’s one thing to be satisfied with your current members, it’s a whole different thing to not allow the public to be engaged and participate in the process. It’s an attack on democracy! Public comment was not accepted before the vote and was not accepted until the very end of the entire meeting. This discourages the public from being involved in their local government. They struggled to get enough applicants last year. This year, they’re telling people who want to apply that they can’t. If the supervisors wanted to vote for Jesse and Kevin after applications had been received, they could have voted for them at that point. Moving forward, when future terms expire, what is to stop the supervisors from just keeping them on the committee indefinitely?

Supervisors who voted against the public applying for these positions:

Tony Krafka (motioned), Brad Vandenberg (2nd), Scott Steager, Jan Sypal, Bob Coufal

Supervisors who voted to support democracy and public engagement:

Scot Bauer, Scott Griess

________________________________________

Other KEY takeaways:

-Many supervisors were not happy with the progress of the comprehensive plan to date.

-The planning consultant informed the supervisors that a couple members (he means Jesse, for one) are stonewalling the process. Someone called them “roadblocks”.

-The supervisors then voted to reappoint one of these roadblocks that is causing the delay in the progress they just said they aren’t happy with.

-Krafka was a key vote in voting DOWN any potential zoning back in 2010 (yep, he’s been in office that long). He has a history of not wanting zoning.

-Krafka spent a large amount of time blaming the consultant for lack of progress, when in fact, the stonewalling from certain committee members is the main cause of delays. Tony motioned to reappoint one of these members.

Please plan to attend the David City school board meeting this Wednesday, Sept 16th, 7pm at the high school. There is a proposed school expansion project with an estimated $26-30 million cost in the works. The school board intends to approve this project without the vote or approval of the public that's footing the bill! This Wednesday's agenda shows they are voting on a CMAR for this project. Let this board know they need to obtain the public's approval before spending our money and committing us to debt for the next ~20+ years.
