The late Burt Reynolds was born 89 years ago today. Did you know Reynolds was an All-State running back for the Wildcats of Palm Beach High School? He played at the Orange Bowl and scored a touchdown during a 27-7 loss to Miami Edison High School in 1953. Back then, he was known as "Buddy" Reynolds. Reynolds was an outstanding high school player who also played defensive back. He was named to the Orlando Sentinel's prestigious All Southern Team--an annual all star team made up of the best high school football players in the South. Reynolds went on to attend Florida State, where his roommate was Lee Corso from Miami Jackson High School. Reynolds suffered a knee injury his freshman year in 1954 that limited his college career.
Reynolds went on to a successful acting career. He even rekindled his football days in movies like The Longest Yard and Semi-Tough. The 1980 movie Smokey and the Bandit II also had scenes shot at the Orange Bowl. He also had partial ownership of the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL, then coached by Steve Spurrier. Reynolds continued to stay close to the Florida State football program. He regularly appeared on the Bobby Bowden television show hosting a segment called Great Moments in Seminole Football History. Burt Reynolds passed away on September 6, 2018. He was 82 years old.
