La Raza Law Students Association of UC Davis School of Law's primary goal is to increase the number of Chicanos and Latinos in the law profession.

Our primary goal is to increase the number of Chicanos and Latinos in the law profession. We are the most active and one of the largest law student organizations at King Hall. We provide a supportive environment for Raza law students to s

ucceed and we serve as a forum for Raza law students to share their culture and identity with other law students. We strive to increase the number of Raza students at King Hall through various recruitment events and information sessions. Each year we host our La Raza Shadow Program, where we invite undergraduate students and local high school students to attend law school classes and presentations, tour the law school, and join us for an informal luncheon to hear what law school is really like. We also work closely with our law school Admissions Office to ensure that our recruitment efforts are reflective of our diverse state. More recently, we have collaborated with Anthony Solana Jr. and For People of Color, Inc. to host law school application workshops and to review the personal statements of students who are applying to law school. Our community outreach efforts have included community-based projects with the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation of Sacramento, bilingual workshops with the U.S. Census, and an emergency food drive for farmworkers who were negatively impacted during the 1999 citrus freeze in the Fresno area. The Lorenzo Patiño Awards Banquet is one of our annual highlights, named after the late Lorenzo E. Patiño, a 1973 King Hall graduate and the first Chicano municipal judge in Sacramento. Judge Patiño dedicated his life to empowering poor communities in the Sacramento area. He died in 1983 after battling with leukemia. The yearly banquet brings law students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the local community to honor our graduating Raza members. La Raza Law Students Association invites you to visit King Hall and tour the university to learn more about the faculty, campus, housing, and financial assistance. King Hall is ranked among the top public law schools in the country and is highly ranked by students for the quality of life. Hello current and past members,

Over the last few years, La Raza has gotten inquiries about being more inclusive of the broader Latinx community. Members (prospective, past, and current) have expressed feelings that the term "raza" and our logo predominantly reflect Mexican culture and is not inclusive. Additionally, folks have expressed wanting to see more variety in the events we host, and for these to be more representative of the broader Latinx community.

These are important concerns and the current board aims to acknowledge these issues and have a conversation about them. To that end, we will be hosting a town hall on Thursday November 21, 2019 from 12-1pm in King Hall 2302. The moderated discussion will focus on the possibility of changing our logo and name to be more reflective of the broader Latinx community present at the law school.

Your perspectives are valuable, and we appreciate any questions, comments, or concerns you may have. If you are unable to attend, please submit questions/comments/concerns on the day of the town hall by going to www.slido.com and entering code .
