I remember my time at the Provincial Government Center in Ramadi in 2008 like it was yesterday. I used to climb on the roof of that building to fix the antennas. Just a few days ago someone else was on that roof raising the ISIS flag. I was the gunner for so many convoys that went through Malaab district and past the glass factory. Now the people in Malaab are trapped and caught in the middle of another war.

The people of Ramadi have endured so much. Please pray for them. My heart goes out to the innocent people that still endure the remnants of our illegal invasion. is making amends for participating in the oppression of those amazing human beings.

I remember one time we received a bunch of deflated soccer balls in the mail and we would inflate them to toss to the kids as we drove by on our convoys. I remember one kid looked just like me when I was a child. I saw myself in him. I saw how happy he was to get that ball, and I remembered when I got my first soccer ball for my birthday. At that moment I realized how privileged I was and how I was abusing that privilege. I couldn't stop but to think how easily I could have been born in a different place and forced to endure the hardship of an occupation.

When you hear about Iraq, stop thinking about the power struggle between one group or another. Just think about the innocent people suffering. People like you and me. Then ask what you're gonna do about it.
