DR. AKIF ESKALEN VISITS CAL POLY We had a wonderful visit with Dr. Eskalen last week. Dr. Eskalen is an Extension Specialist in the UC Cooperative Extension Service, based at UC Davis. His lab focuses on applied research in the identification, biology, epidemiology, and control of fungal pathogens on vines, small fruit & berries, and pome fruits pathology in California. That’s a lot to focus on! During his visit we stopped at several field research sites, the pathology lab and met with researchers and graduate students. Dr. Shunping Ding took advantage of the opportunity to meet and talk about grapevine diseases. Our undergraduate and graduate students had a great conversation about their own research interests and some stories about diagnosing some difficult diseases in grapes. This is the kind of interaction that fosters mutually beneficial scientific collaboration and we look forward to that in the near future! #ucdplantpath #UCANR

In collaboration with UCCE farm advisor , we confirmed Aspergillus niger causes Aspergillus Vine Canker on Grenache/Freedom in California with no viral disease association. Symptoms are reddish canopy in the fall, black conidia at the bark, vascular discoloration, and canker on the wood.
