Daylight Saving Time Ends this Sunday, November 6th - Please keep in mind these safety tips for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians
Daylight saving time ends this Sunday, November 6th at 2 am when we set our clocks back 1 hour. City of Davis Street Smarts recommends road users be cautious as it will be darker during our daily commutes.
Although the seasonal change presents special challenges to road users there are a few simple safety suggestions to help everyone stay safe through this colder, darker season.
Drivers:
• Slow down and Stay Alert. During the evening hours, you need more time to see pedestrians and bicyclists in your path.
• Clean your windows before leaving your drive way. Get to your car a few minutes earlier to clear off all your windows and mirrors of moisture.
• Understand that people who are walking or biking bundled up may not be able to hear or see you as well with hoods and hats on. Slow down around bicyclists and pedestrians and always give them extra space when passing.
Bicyclists and Pedestrians:
• Make yourselves more visible. Light yourself and wear light, reflective clothing so that motorists can see you. California law requires bicyclists to equip their bicycles with a white headlight and a rear red reflector when riding in the dark. It is recommended to equip yourself with more than the minimum; add extra lights and reflectors to increase your visibility.
• Ride with traffic and in the streets. Drivers aren’t looking for bicyclists on the sidewalk or those going against traffic. Be predictable.
• Use marked crosswalks as a pedestrian and cross at signaled intersections whenever possible.
• Never assume that the driver of a vehicle sees you, even when you have the right of way. Give traffic an extra look before crossing at intersections
