VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NATIVE PLANT SEED COLLECTION FOR CHAPARRAL HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECT IN LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST
Join us as we collect seeds in Spring/Summer 2021 in the front country of the Santa Ynez Mountains above Goleta, Santa Barbara and Montecito with botanists from the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and HANA Resources. Collected seed will be used to restore areas invaded by Spanish broom with native chaparral plant species along East Camino Cielo Road and the Fremont fuel break in Los Padres National Forest. With your help, we can restore and enhance native habitat and prevent the expansion of invasive Spanish broom from these areas.

Seed collection will occur over 3-4 volunteer days between April and July 2021. You will be notified of the specific dates after signing up. Volunteers should have some botanical identification experience and additional seed collection training will be provided at each volunteer event. Please be prepared to work off-trail in uneven terrain and wear hiking boots, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and work/gardening gloves. Bring sunscreen, water, lunch, and snacks. From TheStreet: The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) awarded a Technical Assistance Grant to nine California resource conservation districts (RCDs).

The Amador RCD, the Calaveras County RCD, the Tuolumne County RCD, the Cachuma RCD, the Coarsegold RCD, the East Merced RCD, the Napa County RCD, the Lake County RCD and the Sonoma RCD will use the funding to hire staff to deliver conservation planning technical assistance and to assist landowners in implementing Conservation Stewardship Program contracts.

Today marks 84 years since the Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act of 1936 was signed into law, allowing for federal aid to farmers in order to promote the conservation and protection of soil from erosion.

This act, which was amended from the Soil Conservation Act of 1935, was primarily driven by the severe effects of the Dust Bowl that created devastating drought conditions throughout the Great Plains and widespread crop failure.

Today, supports the act in its effort to enhance federal-state coordination and assist landowners and farmers in protecting and conserving the soil on their land.
